Aug. 11 - The Belgian-Iranian sociologist Firouzeh Nahavandi, Professor Emerita of Sociology at Belgium’s ULB University (Université Libre de Bruxelles), has been granted the title of Baroness by King Philippe of Belgium.

The title was conferred on the occasion of the Belgian National Day honors on July 21st in recognition of her distinguished academic career and her contributions to the study of the Muslim world, international development, and the status of women.

It was a surprise announcement which the Royal Palace made over the telephone a few days earlier, Nahavandi explained. In a July 21 interview with the Belgian channel RTBF, Nahavandi said she viewed this honor as recognizing a lifetime of academic work.

“I have conducted research, taught and written extensively, and I continue to do so,” she said. “This is recognition of the transmission of knowledge. For me, that is the most important aspect of everything I’ve done.”

Nahavandi is the author of several books on the Iranian Revolution and on the women of Iran (published in French).

She is also a frequent commentator in the French-speaking media on Iranian politics, the Middle East, Islam, women’s rights and international development.

In a June interview with the Qualita news outlet, she offered insights into what the war with the U.S. and Israel represented for the Islamic Republic.

“This war is also a question of survival for the regime, especially because domestically, the regime has not managed to control the population — despite the fact that the repression is very severe, that people are hanged every day, that arrests are continuing, and that a student rebellion is beginning to take shape,” she said. “The regime is unable to control the situation domestically. So it is determined not to lose face internationally.”

WASHINGTON, Aug 11 (Reuters) – The U.S. military o WASHINGTON, Aug 11 (Reuters) – The U.S. military on Tuesday said it had used missiles to disable the steering gear of a Panama-flagged cargo ship which ignored repeated warnings to stop violating a naval blockade on Iranian ports.

A U.S. Navy MH-60 helicopter fired two Hellfire missiles into the Vela Nova’s engine room, the Central Command added.

“As of Aug. 11, CENTCOM has redirected 55 commercial vessels attempting to run the blockade, disabled 3 non-compliant vessels, and boarded 2,” it said in a statement.

Aug 11 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump acc Aug 11 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump accused Iran of being “devious negotiators” in an interview released late on Monday and described some of his current options in the war — “just bop along” and let Tehran fail economically or hit them “really, really hard.”

“I’m sort of negotiating,” Trump told Real America’s Voice in a phone interview. “They’re very devious negotiators.”

Since the conflict began in late February, Trump has repeatedly oscillated between threats of escalation and claims that a peace deal is imminent. Pakistan said on Tuesday the U.S. and Iran were close to “some sort” of deal, and Qatar said talks on managing the Strait of Hormuz were at an advanced stage, despite reports of new attacks on shipping in regional waters.

Trump described one of his possible strategies as: “Do what I’m doing now: just bop along and look how bad they’re doing.”

“Economically, they are a mess. They can’t borrow money. We control their money, what they had, which is a lot. They had a lot, and we have total control of it. I’m their banker,” he said, referring to frozen Iranian assets.

Another option would be to “Hit them really, really hard,” Trump said.

Trump also shrugged off concerns of low munitions, saying the U.S. was “building them like crazy” and cast blame on his predecessor, former U.S. President Joe Biden.

August 11 - The Iranian economy is in a critical state: triple-digit food inflation, a collapsing currency and mass unemployment have pushed millions more people below the poverty line.

That’s the shocking picture laid out by economists and researchers in recent reports published in the Iranian media.

In an Aug. 9 article published in the Iranian newspaper Donya-e Eghtesad, the economist Massoud Nili compiled economic statistics and indicators illustrating how the structural crisis in the Islamic Republic has placed the economy under pressure from all sides.

The article notes that the exchange rate has soared 50-fold since the beginning of 2018. Over comparable periods in the past, it increased fourfold.

This 50-fold increase did not occur in a consistent manner, but over seven major currency crises which, like powerful earthquakes, shook Iran’s economy and left extensive damage in their wake.

Prices have increased 19-fold over the period, compared to other periods in the recent past, when they surged 3.5 to 3.8 times. Food prices have surged even more sharply, multiplying more than 34 times between 2018 and the present, compared with approximately fourfold increases during similar periods in the past.

Gross domestic product (GDP), which would normally increase roughly 1.5 times over eight-year periods, has shown very little growth since 2018. Over the same period, per-capita net national income has declined by approximately 12 percent.

Statistics also show that between 2018 and 2024, approximately 16 million more people were reported to be living below the poverty line. This increase has no precedent in earlier periods in the recent past.

WASHINGTON, Aug 10 (Reuters) – U.S. President Dona WASHINGTON, Aug 10 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump departed on a secret military flight from Turkey last month when the White House said he was flying aboard Air Force One, an extraordinary move prompted by an Iranian assassination threat, the Washington Post reported Monday.

Trump had taken the newly renovated Qatari-donated jet to Ankara for the NATO summit but he unexpectedly used an older Air Force One when departing the country, a move that prompted questions about the newer plane’s security.

The trip to NATO was the first international travel for the new plane, whose speedy upgrades triggered questions over its cost and security, and took place as hostilities escalated with Iran, which borders Turkey.

Before departing Ankara, Trump said on Truth Social that he would use an older baby blue Air Force One plane “for old time’s sake” to RAF Mildenhall in Britain while the new plane stopped at the same base so U.S. service members stationed there could tour the aircraft.

After Trump boarded the old Air Force One in front of cameras in Ankara, he was secretly shuttled by an airport catering truck to a smaller plane, an Air Force C-32A, the Post reported citing a U.S. official familiar with the operation and corroborating material it reviewed.

The deception operation was triggered by a credible threat to Trump, the Post reported. A similar operation had taken place in 2000, when President Bill Clinton used an unmarked executive jet to fly into Pakistan while sending his formal Air Force One as decoy.

On this occasion, the journalists who thought they were traveling with Trump on the older Air Force One, which was effectively used as a decoy, reported being advised to keep their window shades in the press cabin closed. The Post said aside from reporters, some White House staff also believed that the president was on board.

When asked later by reporters why they had to keep their shades shut during the flight, Trump said it was because they were “probably on a dangerous flight.” He went onto say: “But if I go, you go. Right?”
NEW DELHI, Aug 11 (Reuters) – Shipping traffic thr NEW DELHI, Aug 11 (Reuters) – Shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz fell to six on Monday, compared with a 10-day average of about 11 vessels, shipping data showed, amid fading hopes of a peace deal between the U.S. and Iran.

Four commodity vessels, including two empty oil product tankers, entered the waterway, data from Kpler showed on Tuesday as of 0420 GMT. Two vessels — a small tanker laden with liquefied petroleum gas and another carrying residual fuels — exited the Strait, the data showed.

In pre-war days, about 130 to 140 ships typically transited the strait.

On Monday, 25 vessels transited the Bab el-Mandeb strait on the Red Sea, broadly unchanged when compared with the 10-day average of nearly 24 ships, Kpler data showed.

U.S. President Donald Trump on Monday responded to Iran’s conditions for a peace deal by laying out his own demands that Iran pay compensation for people killed in wars, attacks and protests.

The proposal was a response to Tehran’s demands for compensation and an end to sanctions. The Iranian demands were largely in line with the terms of a preliminary peace deal signed in June, which has since broken down.

Since the war began in February, Trump has repeatedly swung between threats of escalation and assertions that a peace deal is close.
