President Donald Trump delivered a key address in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, during his four-day visit to the Middle East. In his speech, he praised Persian Gulf countries for their impressive economic growth and contrasted it with Iran’s decline under the Islamic Republic.

Trump effectively held a mirror to the state of Iran, highlighting its stark realities. He told his Saudi audience, “While you are erecting remarkable skyscrapers, Tehran’s landmarks are falling apart. Iran’s neglect has resulted in persisting blackouts and a deterioration of farmland.”

He recalled a different state of affairs before the 1979 revolution, when Iran had more power and a larger economy than its Persian Gulf neighbors.

Fast-forward 46 years, and while Arabian expertise has transformed deserts into productive landscapes, he noted, “Iran’s leaders have succeeded in converting green farmland into dry wasteland. They enrich themselves while denying benefits to their people, focusing instead on financing terrorism rather than regional stability.”
