WASHINGTON, Sept 18 (Reuters) – When President Donald Trump addressed the United Nations a year ago, he touted the US bombing of Iran’s nuclear sites just months earlier as “totally obliterating everything” and said he had brought peace between Israel and Iran.

Returning to the world body on Tuesday, Trump will face a deeply skeptical audience increasingly rattled by six months of war between US forces and an emboldened Iran, growing regional instability and a nuclear threat that has not disappeared despite his claims.

Though battered militarily and economically, Tehran has remained defiant, obstructing oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz and in recent days gaining new leverage as its Houthi allies in Yemen tighten their grip on a Red Sea chokepoint, further spiking global energy prices.

The lightning advance by the Houthi militants has put Trump in an ever-tighter bind over the unpopular conflict, dealt a blow to US ally Saudi Arabia and exposed the limits of Washington’s ability to protect its regional partners.

Most European and Asian allies have spurned Trump’s demands for assistance in a conflict he launched without consulting them and which has had damaging fallout for their economies.

But Afghan girls have been educated behind closed doors before. This is the story of Makhfi, “the Hidden One” - a princess of Badakhshan whose brother became her secret school.

What looks like an ordinary Iranian town is hiding What looks like an ordinary Iranian town is hiding an extraordinary secret.

Beneath Nushabad, in Isfahan Province, an underground network of rooms, wells and passageways stretches as deep as 18 metres (59.1 feet) below ground, built so residents could take shelter without fleeing their homes.

Hidden access points, some concealed beneath kitchen ovens, connected houses across town to this subterranean world.

Discover the Iran the world rarely gets to see.

DUBAI, Sept 17 (Reuters) – China has privately asked Tehran to help rein in Yemen’s Houthis after an appeal to Beijing by Saudi Arabia following the Iran-backed group’s military blitz in the past week, according to three Iranian sources familiar with the matter.

Riyadh turned to China for help after the Houthis made rapid advances along the Red Sea coast and around the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, moves that have left Saudi oil exports and shipping more exposed, the sources said.

China has publicly called for restraint, dialogue and the restoration of safe navigation, but its private message went further than the public statements, they said.

Beijing wants Iran to use its influence with the Houthis to help prevent the conflict spreading further across energy routes on which China, the world’s second-largest economy, depends.

The sources, who were briefed on the discussions and spoke on condition of anonymity, did not provide details of how the message was delivered or whether it was conveyed during a visit to China on Wednesday by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi.

The sources said Tehran’s response was that stability and peace in the region depend on ending the US-Israeli war on Iran.

Chinese officials did not issue any explicit threats or indicate that Beijing would seek to pressure Tehran economically if it failed to use its influence over the Houthis, the three Iranian sources said.
