International human rights organizations have sounded the alarm over the escalating number of executions in the Islamic Republic of Iran. In October alone, at least 166 people were executed, marking the highest monthly total in over 20 years.
The regime in Iran is currently the world’s most prolific executioner of children, women, and men on a per capita basis.
On Wednesday, the United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution taking a strong stance against the human rights situation in Iran. The resolution condemns the alarming increase in the use of the death penalty by the Islamic Republic. The resolution calls for international intervention to address the human rights violations in Iran.
Human rights groups view the death penalty in Iran as a tool for instilling fear and maintaining control. The regime has consistently and unjustly targeted ethnic and religious minorities, exacerbating feelings of injustice and discrimination.
