International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) Supports Iran’s Truck Drivers’ Strike: Interview with Dr. Jessica Emami

By Nazenin Ansari

The nationwide strike by truck drivers in Iran has now entered its third week, halting freight operations and causing significant disruptions to supply chains in over 163 cities across the country. Reports from HRANA indicate that the authorities have arrested forty truck drivers and their supporters during this period.

On June 4, the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF), which represents over 16 million transport workers in 150 countries,  expressed strong solidarity “with the courageous truck drivers of Iran“ who are striking against economic injustice and political repression.

To explore the implications of this strike, Dr. Jessica Emami, a consultant specializing in Iranian affairs and a former sociology professor at American University, shared her insights. She discussed the causes and motivations behind the strikes as well as the broader economic and political context that led the drivers to take this stand.
