July 11 – Spain’s High Court has found eight people guilty of trying to assassinate former right wing lawmaker Alejo Vidal-Quadras over his ties to an Iranian opposition group.
Santiago Pedraz, the judge overseeing the case, said the suspects were part of a group involved in crimes targeting the lives of individuals, with some members reportedly under investigation in multiple countries.
The regime has been accused by several western states of employing criminals to target regime opponents and human rights activists who are critical of the Islamic Republic.
Lennart Monterlos, an 18-year-old French-German cyclist who had been missing in Iran since mid-June has been placed in custody, according to Iran‘s foreign minister.
The lawmaker said the young man had been arrested for committing a crime, and that the French embassy had been notified, but did not offer further details. The French ministry also refused to comment on the matter, citing safety concerns.
The Islamic Republic has been criticized by human rights bodies for arbitrarily detaining dual nationals in the country to use as leverage for diplomatic talks with western states.
And the family of UK nationals Lindsay and Craig Foreman, said the couple had survived an attack on Evin prison, where they have been detained, after an Israeli missile struck the prison facility during the war between Iran and Israel last month.
Their son Joe Bennett said his parents had recently been moved to Kerman, an area close to the prison. Several prisoners were believed to have been transferred to undisclosed locations following the attack on the infamous jail.
Israel said it attacked Evin prison because of its reputation for detaining political prisoners, and had targeted court rooms in the facility where some of Iran’s most notorious judges handed down draconian sentences for prisoners of conscience, including the death penalty.
