July 19 – Information obtained by US authorities about a plot by the Islamic Republic to assassinate former US President Donald Trump was shared with the lawmaker’s campaign team ahead of a rally in Pennsylvania last Saturday in which the 2024 election hopeful was injured by a bullet.
The shot was fired by 20-year-old Matthew Crooks in an attempt to kill the Republican candidate, but grazed his ear and struck a man in the crowd who died at the scene. Two other men were also seriously injured in the attack.
There is currently no indication that the shooter was connected to an Islamic Republic plot to kill the former president.
Israel launched new strikes in Gaza to place pressure on the Islamic Republic-backed Hamas group, as it targeted the militant group’s senior leaders.
Palestinian officials said the strikes killed at least 90 Palestinians and wounded several hundred others sheltering in makeshift camps in the area. Israel’s military rejected the claims and said it had struck a compound run by Hamas and was not a civilian camp.
Israel has been engaged in a wider war with Iran after Hamas attacked Israel on Oct. 7 leaving more than 1,200 Israelis dead. Israel’s military response has left more than 34,000 people in Palestine dead.
And Dr. Mai Sato, a prominent academic and an expert on the death penalty, has been appointed as the next United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights in Iran by the UN Human Rights Council.
Dr. Sato will take over the role from Dr. Javaid Rehman, who held the position for the maximum six year term, and whose reports on the state of human rights in Iran garnered worldwide attention.
