EDITORIAL: Kayhan Publishing Celebrates Its 80th Birthday

By Kayhan Life Staff

Dr. Mostafa Mesbahzadeh established Kayhan Publishing 80 years ago in Tehran. The first issue of the Kayhan daily came out on May 27, 1942.

The parallel existence of this historic newspaper both inside Iran, under the Islamic Republic, and outside Iran, in an open political and social climate, enhances its significance as a piece of national and cultural heritage.

We salute Kayhan’s uncompromising professional approach to informing and educating the public in the four decades preceding the 1979 Islamic Revolution. We condemn the paper’s status as the state’s propaganda machine in the past 40 years.

After the Islamic Republic appropriated many of the Pahlavi era’s achievements, including Kayhan Publishing.

Dr. Mesbahzadeh and several veteran journalists, who were forced to leave Iran, established Kayhan London in 1984. Their mission was to repair Kayhan’s reputation, which the Islamic Republic had damaged, and restore the paper’s role as a viable and reliable source of news and information for Iranians.

Kayhan London, which printed its first hard copy issue in May 1984, has been available online for the past eight years.

From the start, Kayhan London has been and continues to be the voice of generations of Iranians who have been forced to endure the Islamic Republic’s rule.

Since its establishment as Kayhan Publishing 80 years ago and during its operation as Kayhan London in exile for the past 38 years, Kayhan has voiced the concerns and advocated the rights of the Iranian people.
