Welcome to the Kayhan Life Week in Review

Oct. 23 - Fears of renewed war grew as mediators sought to revive U.S. talks with the Islamic Republic, but Tehran officials told Reuters they were stalling to deny President Trump a midterm election victory.

Another U.S. carrier approached the region, Israel prepared possible strikes against Iran, and the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) claimed seven “suspected” vessels were hit in the Persian Gulf.

Meanwhile, Trump’s outreach to Putin and Xi opened the door for Moscow and Beijing to help shape the new emerging regional order.

In Europe, regime-linked operations came to light.

In Iran, the state has begun drafting a bill that would criminalize insults to the country’s flag, national anthem, and other symbols of the Islamic Republic, and the Iranian Psychiatric Association warned about the mental toll of war, repression and hardship.

Our arts coverage explored painting and music at a London celebration of Afshin Naghouni’s abstract works.
In Los Angeles, Yasaman Farmanara’s “Under the Armor” examined vulnerability.

LONDON, Oct 23 (Reuters) – Two Iranian nationals are due to go on trial next year charged over an alleged plot to use a homemade bomb to attack the Jewish community in northern England at the behest of a figure believed to be based in Iran, a London court was told on Friday.

Rahman Salehi, 34, and Salam Ahmadyan, 36, appeared at London’s Old Bailey court accused of preparing acts of terrorism. The lawyers for the two men told the court that both intended to plead not guilty.

Prosecutor Lyndon Harris said the men were allegedly seen by police taking photos and video of Jewish sites in Manchester, on the eve of Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar, in September.

Harris added that the prosecution case was that “this was reconnaissance in preparation for an act of terrorism, an attack on the Jewish community in Manchester”.

He said the men were accused of being in contact with a third party, believed to be based in Iran, who it was alleged provided a document with instructions on how to assemble a homemade explosive device made from chlorine and brake fluid.

Prosecutors said at a previous hearing that their alleged targets included the Manchester Jewish Museum and Heaton Park synagogue, the scene of a deadly attack almost a year ago in which two Jewish worshippers were killed.

The two men were told their trial was listed to start in Manchester on June 15 next year.

WASHINGTON, Oct 23 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump said on Friday the United States could end the war with Iran quickly, but questioned whether Washington should seek a swift conclusion or allow the conflict to gradually wind down.

“We could end it very quickly,” Trump said. “Do we want to finish it off or just want to let it wither?”

Speaking to reporters on the White House South Lawn as he left on a trip to Florida, Trump said oil is getting out through the Strait of Hormuz. “We are getting everything we want,’ he said.

DUBAI, Oct 23 (Reuters) – Tehran has drawn up deta

DUBAI, Oct 23 (Reuters) – Tehran has drawn up detailed plans to target undersea communications cables in the Persian Gulf if the United States and Israel attack Iran again, two senior Iranian security officials told Reuters.

Their comments followed warnings by Iranian officials that undersea cables in the region could become targets in any renewed conflict if diplomacy with Washington collapses.

The two Iranian security officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, gave few details and did not say how or where exactly Tehran would carry out such attacks. But one of them said Iran would aim to prevent repairs after any attacks to prolong disruptions to communications, including internet connections.

“If Iran is attacked, there will be no more red lines … from undersea cables to military bases, including covert ones,” one of the officials said.

The official warned Washington not to “play with fire”, and said Iran had full access to the undersea cables and could easily destroy them.

Yadollah Javani, the deputy head of political affairs for Iran‘s Revolutionary Guards (IRGC), said on Wednesday that Iran could target seven major internet cables beneath the Strait of Hormuz if Iranian infrastructure came under attack.

Undersea cables carry around 99% of global internet traffic, according to the International Telecommunication Union, a UN agency. But the global impact of such attacks by Iran could be limited as less than 1% of international bandwidth passes through the Strait of Hormuz, said Alan Mauldin, research director at telecommunications research firm TeleGeography.

The strait separates Iran and Oman, linking the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and Arabian Sea.

The US Department of State and Iran‘s Foreign Ministry did not respond to Reuters’ requests for comment on the Iranian security officials’ remarks. There was no immediate comment from Persian Gulf states.
