COUNCILMEMBERS NITHYA RAMAN AND KATY YAROSLAVSKY COMMEMORATE ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY SINCE THE KILLING OF MAHSA AMIN

LOS ANGELES -- Yesterday, the Los Angeles City Council approved a motion to illuminate City Hall and the Sixth Street Viaduct in the national colors of Iran from September 20 through September 24 to commemorate the one year anniversary since the death of Mahsa Amini. Led by Councilmember Nithya Raman, with support from Councilmember Katy Yaroslavsky, the symbolic lighting reaffirms the City’s commitment to stand with Iranian women as they continue to champion freedom and justice.

Mahsa Amini, a 22-year old Kurdish Iranian woman, was arrested by the Islamic Republic of Iran’s morality police in September 2022. Accused of showing her hair in public, Amini was taken to Evin Prison in Tehran where she was forced to undergo re-education. She later died in government custody.

Since Amini’s death, hundreds of thousands of brave Iranian women and men have gathered in protest throughout Iran calling for an end to the repression of Iranian women, the abolition of compulsory dress codes, and justice for Amini and her family. In response, the Islamic Republic of Iran used live ammunition and plastic bullets in a brutal crackdown on the protests around the country – killing more than 500 protesters, arresting more than 20,000 protesters, injuring tens of thousands, and imposing strict internet censorship.

“The illumination of City Hall and the Sixth Street Viaduct serve as a reminder of the Iranian people’s enduring struggle to be free one year after the horrific death of Mahsa Amini,” said Councilmember Raman. “Across the world, violence is routinely enacted upon women, upon our bodies, for the purpose of maintaining political power. This City will continue to stand with our Iranian friends, family, and neighbors in uplifting the voices of the women demanding their right to live as free citizens.”

Sept 20 (Reuters) – Qatar wants to capitalise on a U.S.-Iranian detainee deal that it mediated during months of delicate diplomacy to find common ground on a more intractable issue between the two hardened adversaries: the dispute over Iran‘s nuclear programme.

Russia’s war in Ukraine may have top billing at the U.N. General Assembly, but Iran‘s nuclear ambitions cast a shadow over the Middle East and worry the West. And as the dispute rumbles on, Tehran has steadily enriched more uranium and moved closer to Moscow by supplying drones to Russia’s army.

A nuclear deal with Iran remains a distant prospect, five years after former President Donald Trump tore up a pact that had eased sanctions in return for Tehran curbing nuclear work.

A U.S. election in 2024 makes those prospects bleaker still. U.S. President Joe Biden has already faced Republican criticism for unfreezing $6 billion of Iran‘s assets in the detainee deal.

Yet Qatar, a tiny but hugely rich Gulf Arab state with grand diplomatic ambitions, is pressing both sides to engage in more talks and reach “understandings”, according to three regional sources familiar with discussions that Doha has held separately with both sides.

The understandings would aim to address slowing Tehran’s uranium enrichment alongside more international monitoring, curbing activities of Iran‘s proxy militias in the region and halting Iran‘s drone exports, all in return for some waivers on U.S. sanctions on Iranian oil exports, the three sources said.

Officials in Doha said Qatari officials would hold separate meetings with Iranian and U.S. officials at the U.N. meeting in New York this week. One source briefed on the talks said those meetings would include discussing enrichment and Iranian drones.

If there is progress, Qatar aims to host indirect talks between Tehran and Washington, the source said, after Qatar helped forge the detainee deal with shuttle diplomacy between Iranian and U.S. negotiators staying in separate hotels in Doha.

WASHINGTON, Sept 20 (Reuters) – Saudi Arabian Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman said in a U.S. television interview that his country was moving steadily closer to normalizing relations with Israel and also warned that if Iran gets a nuclear weapon, “we have to get one.”

“Every day we get closer,” the crown prince told Fox News according to excerpts of an interview to be shown later on Wednesday, when asked to characterize talks aimed at long-time foes Israel and Saudi Arabia reaching a landmark agreement to open diplomatic relations.

The conservative U.S. network’s interview with the crown prince, widely known as MbS, comes as President Joe Biden’s administration presses ahead with an effort to broker historic ties between the two regional powerhouses, Washington’s top Middle East allies.

The normalization talks are the centerpiece of complex negotiations that also include discussions of U.S. security guarantees and civilian nuclear help that Riyadh has sought, as well as possible Israeli concessions to the Palestinians.

“For us, the Palestinian issue is very important. We need to solve that part,” MbS said when asked what it would take to get a normalization agreement. “And we have a good negotiations continue until now.”

“We got to see where we go. We hope that will reach a place, that it will ease the life of the Palestinians, get Israel as a player in the Middle East,” he said, speaking in English.

MbS also voiced concern about the possibility of Iran, a mutual adversary of Saudi Arabia and Israel that the U.S. wants to contain, could obtain a nuclear weapon. Tehran has denied seeking a nuclear bomb.

“That’s a bad move,” he said. “If you use it, you got to have a big fight with the rest of the world.”

Lord Stuart Polak, a Conservative peer and the president of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, condemned the Iranian regime for its human rights violations and its support for terrorism in his speech at the House of Lords on September 20, 2023.

He praised Israel’s Ambassador to the UN, Gilad Erdan, for his courageous protest against Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi’s speech at the UN General Assembly, where Erdan held up a sign featuring the photo of Mahsa Amini, a young Iranian woman who died in the custody of Iran’s morality police.

He said that Erdan’s action was a powerful symbol of solidarity with the Iranian people who suffer under the oppressive rule of Raisi, whom he called “the butcher of Tehran”.

He also criticized the UN for giving a platform to Raisi, who is accused of being responsible for the mass execution of thousands of political prisoners in 1988. He urged the UK government and the international community to take a firm stance against Iran’s nuclear ambitions and its destabilizing activities in the region. He said that Iran poses a grave threat to global peace and security, and that appeasement and dialogue are not effective strategies to deal with such a rogue state. He called for more sanctions and diplomatic pressure on Iran until it changes its behavior and respects human rights and international law.
