Ferran Torres scored the decisive goal in the 106th minute after the match went to extra time.

The result gives Spain their second World Cup title, following their 2010 triumph, and caps a tournament in which the three host nations, the United States, Canada and Mexico, were all eliminated in the Round of 16. Canada lost to Morocco, Mexico fell to England and the United States was eliminated by Belgium in that round.

Argentina, the defending champions, came into the final looking to become the first team in decades to win consecutive World Cup titles, but fell short against a Spanish side that has now established itself as one of the sport’s most successful national teams of the era.

The repeated targeting of civilian facilities amounted to a dangerous escalation and violated international law, the U.N. Charter and U.N. Security Council Resolution 2817, the ministry said in a statement.

It said Iran bore full legal and moral responsibility for the attack and its consequences.
