Dubai, Sept 27 (Reuters) – Iran’s Revolutionary Guards Successfully Launched a Third Military Satellite Into Orbit on Wednesday, State Media Reported, Citing Minister of Communications Issa Zarepour.

The Noor 3 Imaging Satellite Orbits at an Altitude of 450 Kilometres (280 Miles) Above the Earth’s Surface and Was Launched by the Three-Stage Qased, or Messenger Carrier, State Media Said, Which Launched Its Predecessor Noor 2 in 2022.

The u.s. Military Says the Same Long-Range Ballistic Technology Used to Put Satellites Into Orbit Could Also Allow Tehran to Launch Longer-Range Weapons, Possibly Including Nuclear Warheads.

Tehran Denies u.s. Assertions That Such Activity Is a Cover for Ballistic Missile Development and Says It Has Never Pursued the Development of Nuclear Weapons.

Iran, Which Has One of the Biggest Missile Programs in the Middle East, Has Suffered Several Failed Satellite Launches in Recent Years Due to Technical Issues.

The Biden Administration Issued Fresh Iran-Related Sanctions on Sept. 19, Targeting Multiple People and Entities in Iran, Russia, China and Turkey in Connection With Tehran’s Drone and Military Aircraft Development.

It Had Previously Imposed Sanctions on Iran’s Civilian Space Agency and Two Research Organisations in 2019, Saying They Were Being Used to Advance Tehran’s Ballistic Missile Program.

GORIS, Armenia, Sept 28 (Reuters) – More than half the 120,000 ethnic Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh have left in less than four days after Azerbaijan seized control of the mountain enclave where they had managed to defend their autonomy for three decades.

Azerbaijan’s lightning military operation triggered an exodus unparalleled in the South Caucasus since the war in which Armenians took over the territory as the Soviet Union broke up, and hundreds of thousands of Azeris fled.

Azerbaijan says it is prepared to respect ethnic Armenian rights as it reabsorbs the region, but with a history burdened by folk memories of alleged genocide, ethnic cleansing, pogroms and at least two wars, the Armenians are fleeing in fear.

By Thursday morning, Yerevan said 65,036 people had crossed into neighbouring Armenia, most driving for over 24 hours with their belongings down a choked mountain corridor through Azerbaijan.

“This is one of the darkest pages of Armenian history,” said Father David, a 33-year-old Armenian priest who came to the border to provide spiritual support for those fleeing. “The whole of Armenian history is full of hardships.”

Many of the Armenians in heavily laden cars, trucks, buses and even tractors spoke of spending cold mountain nights with hunger and fear churning in their stomachs.

WASHINGTON, Sept 27 (Reuters) – The United States on Wednesday placed sanctions on entities and people based in China, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Iran for aiding the Iranian attack drone program, which Washington accuses of supplying such weapons to Russia for use in Ukraine.

The U.S. Treasury said it put sanctions on five entities and two people who were part of a network helping procure sensitive parts – including servomotors, which help control position and speed – for Iran‘s unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) program.

The network facilitated shipments and financial transactions for the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps’ procurement of such motors used in Iran‘s Shahed-136 drones, it said, adding that a motor procured by the network was found recently in the remains of a Russia-operated Shahed-136 drone shot down in Ukraine.
“Iranian-made UAVs continue to be a key tool for Russia in its attacks in Ukraine, including those that terrorize Ukrainian citizens and attack its critical infrastructure,” Treasury Under Secretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Brian Nelson said in a statement.

Iran says it has not provided Russia with drones for use in Ukraine.

The United States and its allies imposed extensive sanctions on Russia after its February 2022 invasion of Ukraine. But supply channels from Black Sea neighbor Turkey and other trading hubs have remained open, prompting Washington to issue repeated warnings about the export of chemicals, microchips and other products that can be used in Moscow’s war effort.

Washington has also previously said there is “poor sanctions compliance” in the United Arab Emirates.
