DUBAI, Oct 14 (Reuters) – A container ship sank in DUBAI, Oct 14 (Reuters) – A container ship sank in waters south of the Strait of Hormuz after hitting a naval mine and catching fire, Iran‘s Revolutionary Guards Navy said in a statement shared by state media on Wednesday.

The ship carrying more than 2,500 containers had attempted to transit what the Guards described as an unauthorised and dangerous route, the statement said, warning local vessels and fishermen to take care.

DUBAI, Oct 14 (Reuters) – US claims that Iran‘s ec DUBAI, Oct 14 (Reuters) – US claims that Iran‘s economy is collapsing are an illusion, the governor of Iran‘s central bank said on Wednesday at an International Monetary Fund meeting in Bangkok, as Tehran faces a US naval blockade aimed at driving its oil exports to zero and draining state coffers.

Washington reinstated its blockade of Iranian ports in July and launched “Operation Economic Outcast” on August 24, a campaign aimed at severing Iran’s remaining financial and commercial links with the global economy.

According to energy intelligence platform Vortexa, Iran’s seaborne crude exports fell to zero in the second week of September from a 14-day average of 230,000 barrels per day at the start of the month, and remained there as of October 5.

In September, Washington expanded the campaign to target Iranian airlines, further isolating the country and making links to the outside world more limited and costly.

US pressure has coincided with a sharp fall in the Iranian rial. According to exchange-rate data from Iranian currency tracker Bonbast, the rial has lost nearly 35% of its value against the US dollar since July.

Hemmati said the central bank was prioritising curbing inflation, stabilising inflation expectations, preserving financial stability and maintaining banking and payment services, while securing foreign currency for medicine and essential goods. Annual inflation reached 73.6% in September, according to the Statistical Centre of Iran.

Iran’s central bank launched a program in late September to sell up to $2 billion through state banks to support the rial.

JERUSALEM, Oct 14 (Reuters) – Israeli Prime Minist JERUSALEM, Oct 14 (Reuters) – Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Wednesday that he was not in favour of a preemptive strike against Iran before Israel’s October 27 election but also warned Tehran and its proxies against striking Israel.

“It is not convenient for us, it’s no good,” Netanyahu said in an interview on Israel’s Army Radio, when asked about the possibility of a preemptive strike and allegations by his political rivals that he was seeking a military confrontation ahead of the election.

“Even if Iran fires missiles at us they will blame me,” Netanyahu said, though he also repeated his previous warnings to Iran, saying Israel would respond forcefully if attacked.

He would not elaborate on the possibility of a preemptive strike after the election or about his recent discussions with Washington about Iran.

The United States and Iran have been at war since February 28 when the US and Israel attacked Iran and Tehran responded with its own strikes on Israel and [Persian] Gulf states.

Israel and Iran have not traded fire since June.

Asked whether Israel was assisting Saudi Arabia against attacks by the Iran-aligned Yemeni Houthis, Netanyahu said:

“I don’t get into those matters. I can only tell you that many countries in the Middle East are turning to us following our massive success and tremendous achievements.”

Saudi Arabia has faced widening Houthi strikes over the past week, including an attack on Riyadh airport on Saturday that killed 13 people.

Netanyahu said that Iran‘s proxies were also looking to launch attacks on Israel before the election.

Unity is essential to the pursuit of a free, democratic and united Iran. The people of Iran must decide their own future.

Our shared responsibility is to support their voices, their freedom and their right to self-determination.

WASHINGTON, Oct 13 (Reuters) – President Donald Trump said on Monday he did not believe that China and Russia were helping Iran “at all,” even as US intelligence reports in recent months have found that both countries directly support Tehran’s war effort.

Trump said on Truth Social that he had seen comments from his critics and opponents that China and Russia were helping Iran. Moscow and Beijing maintain close ties with Tehran.

“If they are, it’s at a very low level, but I don’t believe they are at all. They have too much to lose, and we would know about it, and know about it very fast,” Trump wrote.

U.S. intelligence assessments from recent months have shown that Russia and China are providing military support to Iran in the form of satellite imagery for targeting purposes and components for weapons, according to two people briefed on the matter.

Trump said in July he trusted China and Russia not to help Tehran in the Iran war, but warned that if they did get involved “it would be very bad for them.”
