CAIRO, Sept 21 (Reuters) – Iran’s President Eb CAIRO, Sept 21 (Reuters) – Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi said a meeting of the Iranian and Egyptian foreign ministers in New York could pave the way for a restoration of ties.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran does not see any obstacle in establishing relations with Egypt, and this issue has been announced to the Egyptian side as well,” Raisi told a press conference at the end of his trip to New York for the United Nations leaders meeting, according to the website of the Iranian presidency.

“Today’s meeting of the foreign ministers of the two countries can also be a chapter to start and revive relations between the two countries.”

Earlier on Wednesday, Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry received his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amirabdollahian at the headquarters of Egypt’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York.

Amirabdollahian said strengthening relations “will serve common interests” while Shoukry underlined the importance of cooperating with all countries in the region in the face of ongoing instability.

“In order to strengthen relations with neighbouring, Muslim, and aligned countries, the Islamic Republic of Iran will extend its hand to any country that want to cooperate with us,” Raisi added.

Relations between Egypt and Iran have generally been fraught in recent decades although the two countries have maintained diplomatic contacts.

Some Middle Eastern countries, including Egypt, have taken steps to ease regional tensions in recent months.

Egypt’s Sunni Muslim Arab ally Saudi Arabia and Shi’ite Muslim Iran restored diplomatic relations earlier this year while Cairo has mended a rift with Qatar and re-established ties with Turkey.

LONDON, Sept 21 (Reuters) – A former British sol LONDON, Sept 21 (Reuters) – A former British soldier charged with terrorism and Official Secret Act offences pleaded not guilty on Thursday to breaking out of prison and going on the run.

Prosecutors say Daniel Abed Khalife, 21, escaped from London’s Wandsworth prison on Sep. 6 by attaching himself to the underside of a food delivery truck.

After a four-day nationwide manhunt, police said he was recaptured by a plain clothes officer while cycling alongside a canal in west London.

Khalife, wearing a blue and yellow sweatshirt, appeared by video link at the Old Bailey on Thursday and pleaded not guilty to one count of escaping from lawful custody.

He was previously in custody awaiting trial on a charge of obtaining information from the Ministry of Defence’s Joint Personnel Administration System, a charge under the Terrorism Act, while he was based at barracks in central England in 2021.

Khalife is also accused of staging a bomb hoax by placing three canisters with wires on a desk and a further charge of obtaining information which might be “directly or indirectly useful to an enemy”.

The BBC has reported he was accused of gathering intelligence for Iran.

COUNCILMEMBERS NITHYA RAMAN AND KATY YAROSLAVSKY C COUNCILMEMBERS NITHYA RAMAN AND KATY YAROSLAVSKY COMMEMORATE ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY SINCE THE KILLING OF MAHSA AMIN

LOS ANGELES -- Yesterday, the Los Angeles City Council approved a motion to illuminate City Hall and the Sixth Street Viaduct in the national colors of Iran from September 20 through September 24 to commemorate the one year anniversary since the death of Mahsa Amini. Led by Councilmember Nithya Raman, with support from Councilmember Katy Yaroslavsky, the symbolic lighting reaffirms the City’s commitment to stand with Iranian women as they continue to champion freedom and justice.

Mahsa Amini, a 22-year old Kurdish Iranian woman, was arrested by the Islamic Republic of Iran’s morality police in September 2022. Accused of showing her hair in public, Amini was taken to Evin Prison in Tehran where she was forced to undergo re-education. She later died in government custody.

Since Amini’s death, hundreds of thousands of brave Iranian women and men have gathered in protest throughout Iran calling for an end to the repression of Iranian women, the abolition of compulsory dress codes, and justice for Amini and her family. In response, the Islamic Republic of Iran used live ammunition and plastic bullets in a brutal crackdown on the protests around the country – killing more than 500 protesters, arresting more than 20,000 protesters, injuring tens of thousands, and imposing strict internet censorship.

“The illumination of City Hall and the Sixth Street Viaduct serve as a reminder of the Iranian people’s enduring struggle to be free one year after the horrific death of Mahsa Amini,” said Councilmember Raman. “Across the world, violence is routinely enacted upon women, upon our bodies, for the purpose of maintaining political power. This City will continue to stand with our Iranian friends, family, and neighbors in uplifting the voices of the women demanding their right to live as free citizens.”
