By Kayhan Life Staff Oct. 21 - The prominent Irani By Kayhan Life Staff Oct. 21 - The prominent Iranian artist Afshin Naghouni was celebrated in an exceptional evening of music and art at London’s King’s Place performance hall on Oct. 11. The evening began with the world premiere of a program of contemporary classical music by the Iranian-born composer and instrument designer Amir Konjani — all of them inspired by Naghouni’s new series of abstract paintings. Hundreds of audience members enjoyed pieces of experimental music by Konjani, who has also written the soundtrack for the Oscar-winning short film “The Silent Child,” as well as music for the London Symphony Orchestra. Eight double bass players from the London Sinfonietta were joined onstage by the prominent harpist Gabriella Dall’Olio and pianist Aleksander Szram. They played the harp and the piano, respectively, but also instruments designed by Konjani: a Kraken Soveida harp, with steel tubes branching out of it, and a Kraken harpsichord. The performance was conducted by Nazanin Aghakhani, a Vienna-born pianist and composer of Iranian descent who in 2010 became the first woman to conduct the Tehran Symphony Orchestra in Iran. After the hourlong concert, audience members were invited into the performance hall nextdoor, which had been transformed into an art gallery. There, they experienced a striking display of Naghouni’s abstract paintings inspired by Old Masters: Rubens, Rembrandt, Caravaggio, Poussin … The abstract paintings — large canvases covered with swirls of vivid color — were dramatically lit against a curtained backdrop. Viewers could make out the traces and contours of the Old Master works that served as each painting’s inspiration. “Amir Konjani and I had been working with this material for a few years, and the music was familiar to me,” said Naghouni in an interview after the event. “But to see the evening take place in the best possible conditions, both in terms of the music on stage and the paintings in the gallery, was a ‘wow’ experience.” Continues on kayhanlife.com as a free article. @afshinnaghouni #afshinnaghouni #kayhanlife

The move was due to a possible resumption of hostilities, particularly with Iran-aligned Houthi militia in Yemen, two of the US officials said. The US Embassy in Riyadh issued a security alert on Wednesday about possible further attacks by the Houthis on Saudi Arabia, after recent deadly strikes including on Riyadh’s airport. Two of the US officials said the ordered departures would potentially involve the evacuation of all personnel and their families from the US Mission to Saudi Arabia. BASRA, Oct 21 (Reuters) – Iraq has closed the busy BASRA, Oct 21 (Reuters) – Iraq has closed the busy Sheeb border crossing with Iran to review security and install detection equipment to stop the smuggling of prohibited materials, an Iraqi border official said on Wednesday. Sheeb would be closed to passengers, vehicles and commercial trucks until further notice, two other sources at the crossing said. A security official from Iran‘s southwestern Khuzestan province also said that the Sheeb crossing, known in Iran as Chazabeh, will be closed until further notice, adding that the decision was taken by the Iraqi government, the Iranian labour news agency reported on Wednesday. The Iranian official, Valiollah Hayati, said consultations to resume operations at the border crossing were ongoing between Iran‘s Interior Ministry and Iraqi provincial authorities. Hayati advised passengers and trucks to use Shalamcheh crossing, also in Khuzestan province, which Iraq closed temporarily in September as a precaution after drone attacks on Saudi Arabia, two security sources said at the time. Riyadh said the drones had been launched from Iraq, which did not comment on the matter. The current security measures at Sheeb are weak and inadequate, the Iraqi border crossing official told Reuters. By Samia Nakhoul DUBAI, Oct 21 (Reuters) – Israel’ By Samia Nakhoul DUBAI, Oct 21 (Reuters) – Israel’s election next week may change its leader, but not its strategy: Iran will remain its chief adversary, military force will continue to be its preferred tool and Palestinian statehood a distant prospect, regional policymakers and analysts say. That is because the strategic assumptions underpinning Israeli policy were hardened by the October 7, 2023, attacks on southern Israeli communities by Palestinian militant group Hamas and by the wars in Gaza, Lebanon and Iran. If anything, Israel could toughen its security policy, the analysts said, as victory for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu with the backing of far-right coalition partners could embolden him to step up the war with Iran, tighten Israel’s grip on the occupied West Bank and push diplomacy further to the margins.Israel’s security doctrine now rests on three pillars: breaking Iran, holding buffer zones beyond its borders and using force to deter enemies. The real divide is one of degree rather than direction — how aggressively Israel fights its wars, how far it expands Jewish settlements in the West Bank and whether any leader opts for diplomacy, the analysts said. From Tehran to Riyadh, Tuesday’s election is not seen as a potential turning point but as a test of whether the Middle East is settling into a long confrontation, where wars ebb and flow while the underlying conflicts are unresolved. “If Netanyahu is elected, he’ll do whatever he thinks he wants to do,” said Aviv Bushinsky, a former adviser to Netanyahu. “Expansion of the settlements will continue. The wars against Iran, Hamas and Hezbollah will continue.””What you see now is what you’ll see after the election, maybe even more aggressively,” he said. “As long as Iran is in such a situation, it’s a waste of time talking about Palestine.” Netanyahu said on Sunday that Israel must prioritise “prevention and offence over containment and defence”, including pre-emptive strikes to thwart emerging threats, while establishing Israel as a regional power and maximising its independence in armaments.
