The West Must Not ‘Bank on the Iranian Regime,’ Warns Renowned Journalist Amir Taheri

By Nazenin Ansari

Kayhan London and Kayhan Life recently conducted video interviews with Amir Taheri, the Chairman of Gatestone Europe and a renowned Iranian journalist who was the editor-in-chief of Kayhan Daily from 1972 to 1979.

Taheri discussed the dynamics between the Islamic Republic and the United States, Israel, and Europe, and said it would be ill advised for Western powers and Israel to seek to accommodate the regime in Tehran and strike deals with it.

“Don’t bank on the Iranian regime,” he said in the interview. “It harms you, and the Iranian people.”

He also expressed skepticism about the possibility of Sayyid Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei being the successor to his father, Ali Khamenei, as the next supreme leader of the Islamic Republic.

“There is no dynastic legitimacy with Khamenei, whose own rise to supreme leader was somewhat of a comedy,” he said.

Taheri pointed out that the United States was now the sole global superpower.   He predicted that the incoming Trump administration would prioritize two key areas in foreign policy: resolving the conflict in Ukraine, and exploring avenues for change in Iran.

Taheri’s message to the new American administration was clear: “Most Iranians are dissatisfied with the current regime. They want regime change. They wish to be friends with you, as they once were, and it’s in your best interest to help us transition from the present regime to a new one.”
