A week after the first direct talks between the United States and Russia in Saudi Arabia, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov announced on February 26 that the political dynamics surrounding Ukraine were shifting.

His comments followed a meeting with Masoud Pezeshkian, the President of the Islamic Republic, and Abbas Araghchi, its Foreign Minister in Tehran. According to reports from Kuwait’s Al-Jarida newspaper, Lavrov offered to mediate between Mr Khamenei’s regime and the Trump administration over Tehran’s nuclear program.

Analysts in Iran speculate that Russia may use the clerical regime as a bargaining chip to negotiate a resolution to the Ukraine conflict that favors Moscow. Al-Jarida’s sources noted that Lavrov joked to officials in Tehran, stating, “Russia has lost Syria but won’t accept losing Iran.”
