Oct. 29 – Iran said this week that it would rejoin talks to revive the 2015 nuclear deal in Vienna, at the end of November.
The announcement has put an end to speculation about whether Tehran would return to the negotiations with the six world powers, following a several months-long pause in the discussions. Iran’s lead nuclear negotiator Ali Bagheri confirmed the decision in a tweet and said the exact date for resuming talks would be announced next week.
A suspected cyber attack in Iran which disabled fueling systems at gas stations around the country led to several hours of disruption on Tuesday as technical experts scrambled to resolve the glitch.
Speaking on Iran’s state TV, the secretary for Iran’s Supreme Council of Cyberspace Abolhassan Firouzabadi, blamed the network disruption on a foreign country, but said it was too early to say which state was involved and how the attack was carried out.
Grocery prices soared in Iran, as high inflation and the imposition of US sanctions continued to ravage the country. Iran’s inflation rate is the highest since 1994, causing food prices to go up by almost 60 percent, according to a report by the Associated Press news agency.
Meanwhile the cost of vegetables may have risen by as much as 70 percent, and other basic goods such as rice and bread are believed to have risen by more than 50 percent, according to an online article in Eurofruit.
And Baquer Namazi, the 84-year-old Iranian-American held hostage in Iran has received emergency surgery in the country to unblock a main artery leading to his brain.
The former senior Unicef official was banned from traveling outside the country following a conviction in 2016 for cooperating with the US government. Namazi was sentenced to 10 years in prison but was later released due to health reasons.
Namazi’s legal team had asked Iranian officials if he could travel to the US to have the surgery, but the request was declined.
Namazi’s son, Siamak Namazi has been imprisoned in Iran on spying charges since 2015. Siamak is currently the longest-held American hostage in Iran. The Namazis have always denied the charges against them.
