Flash Briefing: Oct. 25, 2024

Oct. 25 – The United States issued fresh charges over an attempted plot to kidnap and assassinate prominent Iranian-American human rights campaigner Masih Alinejad in New York.

The court filing indicts members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as well as others.

Prosecutors had previously said that the defendants had plotted to lure Alinejad out of her house by asking her for flowers from her garden and then shooting her.

Iran, China and Russia were accused of intending to stoke violence in the US, ahead of the Nov. 5 presidential elections.

U.S. intelligence officials said foreign actors could use physical threats and violence, and conduct disinformation operations to undermine the elections.

Other tactics may also involve accusations of election fraud and inaccurate ballot counts.

And the mother of a daughter who was killed under mysterious circumstances during Iran’s nationwide anti-government protests in 2022 has been arrested by Iranian authorities.

Nasrin Shakarami, whose daughter Nika went missing during the demonstrations and who her mother believes was killed by IRGC interrogators while in custody, was arrested on Oct. 16.

Mrs Shakarami has remained vocal about her daughter’s disappearance and death. No formal charges against her have been confirmed.
