Türkiye emerged as the winner in Syria’s latest chapter, following the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Al-Assad had been a staunch ally of Iran, which relied heavily on trade routes through Syria to transport weapons, drugs and military equipment.
Türkiye reportedly supported the rebel offensive led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) to oust Syrian President al-Assad, with Iran saying the HTS would not have been able to make such gains without Türkiye’s involvement.
The Turkish government has long been a steadfast supporter of the Syrian opposition despite the policy being seen as deeply unpopular by some.
However, that support has paid off and Ankara is likely to enjoy greater influence and power in Syria. It is a development which is set to change the dynamics in the region considerably.
