Last weekend, talks took place in Oman between the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran regarding Iran’s nuclear program, set against the backdrop of ongoing anti-government demonstrations within Iran.
As the Iranian economy continued to spiral, retired workers protested across Iran about their dire living standards. In addition, prisoners in 40 jails nationwide staged their 64th protest against the prolific use of the death penalty in the Islamic Republic, with the slogan “No to Executions.”
The Iranian Ambassador to Oman was also in protest mode after allegations emerged that Kazem Gharibabadi, the clerical state’s deputy foreign minister, was captured on video pocketing a $14,000 gold fountain pen during the talks. The pen was reportedly returned afterwards.
Tehran’s ambassador to Oman denied the incident, labeling the claims “a vile lie.”
