The Islamic Republic insists that Iran’s malaise is due to the war and sanctions. But the forces debilitating Iran are rooted at home: misplaced priorities, chronic mismanagement, systemic corruption, and unremitting repression.
For decades, the regime has poured resources into ballistic missiles, the nuclear program, and security institutions such as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, at the expense of public services: schools, roads, power networks, and water systems, etc.
Iran’s most enduring threat is not beyond its borders; it is the Islamic Republic’s own rule, failing to put Iran’s national interests first.
