On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump reinstated his âMaximum Pressureâ policy against the Islamic Republic of Iran to prevent it from acquiring a nuclear weapon.
While signing the order, he expressed some hesitance, stating, âIâm unhappy to do it,â but added that he was signing it because: âeveryone wants me to sign it.â Trump also said that he was willing to negotiate with the regime in Iran and was keen to talk directly with its theocratic leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
The newly signed Executive Order reaffirms the tough policies on the clerical state that were the hallmark of Trump’s first term as President. It mandates the U.S. Treasury Secretary to impose âmaximum economic pressureâ on Iran, which includes sanctions and enforcement measures against those who violate existing restrictions. The order also directs the Treasury and State Department to spearhead efforts aimed at âdriving Iranâs oil exports to zero.â
Furthermore, the Executive Order instructs the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations to collaborate with allies to finalize the snapback of international sanctions and restrictions on Iran, as outlined in the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
The deal, which aimed to limit Iranâs nuclear program in exchange for lifting sanctions, involved Iran, China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, the U.S., and the European Union. The U.S. withdrew from the agreement in 2018 during Trump’s first term.
