Last week, the board of governors of the UN atomic watchdog passed a resolution urging the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI) to urgently improve its cooperation with the agency.
In response, Tehran announced that it had activated thousands of uranium centrifuges, a move that has the potential to escalate tensions in the region significantly and could have profound implications for global security.
Mohammad Eslami, the head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization, explained that the decision to inject gas into the advanced centrifuges was a direct response to the resolution. This came after his government’s statement that it would not cooperate if European powers attempted to force its engagement through ‘confrontation and resolution issuance, ‘ as the Iranian Students’ News Agency (ISNA) reported.
Discussions by Western powers to re-impose all former UN sanctions on Iran’s nuclear program were met with a warning by Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi, who said the reimposition of sanctions would lead to Iran shifting towards the possession of nuclear weapons.
Araghchi added that Iran was also prepared to keep supplying armaments to its proxy group, Hezbollah, in Lebanon, casting doubt on the state’s desire to keep peace in the region.
Representatives from Iran were scheduled to meet with their counterparts from Britain, France, and Germany on Friday to discuss the nuclear program.
