WASHINGTON, April 16 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump said on Thursday that if a deal with Iran to conclude the waris reached and signed in Islamabad, he might go, and that Iran has agreed to almost everything.

Trump struck an optimistic tone about Iran as he spoke with reporters on the White House lawn on his way to a trip to Nevada and Arizona. He said he could extend a U.S.-Iran ceasefire set to expire next week, but may not need to do so.

“If a deal is signed in Islamabad I may go,” Trump said. “They want me.”

He also said without providing evidence that Iran has agreed to give up the enriched uranium believed buried from U.S.-Israeli airstrikes last year. Trump is pushing for a deal with Iran in which Tehran would give up its nuclear program.

WASHINGTON, April 16 (Reuters) – U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday said Pope Leo was free to say what he wanted but that it was important for him to understand that Iran could never have a nuclear weapon.

Trump has repeatedly criticized the religious leader, who has emerged as an outspoken critic of the U.S.-Israeli war on Iran in recent weeks.

Trump says he is responsible for Leo’s appointment, and has accused him of being “weak” on foreign policy.

“The Pope has to understand – it’s very simple – Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon. The world would be in great danger,” he told reporters at the White House.

Trump’s criticism has triggered widespread backlash from U.S. Christians across the political spectrum.
AP — FIFA President Gianni Infantino said Wednesd AP — FIFA President Gianni Infantino said Wednesday that Iran will participate in the World Cup “for sure” despite its war with the United States.
Speaking at CNBC’s Invest in America Forum, Infantino said it is important that Iran participates in the World Cup even though its participation has been in doubt since the US and Israel launched airstrikes on the country.

“The Iranian team is coming for sure, yes,” Infantino said. “We hope that by then, of course, the situation will be a peaceful situation. As I said, that would definitely help. But Iran has to come. Of course, they represent their people. They have qualified. The players want to play.”

Infantino met with the Iranian national team in Antalya, Turkey, two weeks ago and said Wednesday he was impressed.

“I went to see them. They are actually quite a good team as well,” Infantino said. “And they really want to play and they should play. Sports should be outside of politics now.”

Infantino acknowledged it’s not always possible to achieve the separation of sports and politics.

“OK we don’t live on the moon, we live on planet Earth,” Infantino said. “But you know if there is nobody else that believes in building bridges and in keeping them, you know, intact and together, well we are doing that job.”

The United States will co-host the World Cup with Canada and Mexico.

Iran is scheduled to play two group-stage games in Inglewood, California, and one in Seattle.

The war has raised doubts about Iran’s participation in the World Cup. There have been conflicting public comments from Iranian government and soccer officials. US President Donald Trump discouraged the Iranian team from attending the tournament, citing safety concerns.

April 16 - On March 23, 2026, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Jay Clayton announced a settlement that ended 17 years of litigation and allowed the victims of what the attorney termed “Iranian state-sponsored terrorism” to receive more than $300 million in compensation.

At the center of that legal battle was 650 Fifth Avenue, a 36-story office tower in Midtown Manhattan, which federal prosecutors said concealed an Iranian government-owned bank’s interests.

Among the hundreds of victims and relatives set to benefit are family members of those killed in the 1983 Beirut bombings, in the Sept. 11 attacks, and in attacks by Iran’s proxies against civilians, including U.S. citizens, in Israel, Lebanon, and elsewhere. Also involved in the settlement are the family of a former Iranian military officer who was imprisoned, tortured, and executed by the Islamic Republic after being lured back to Iran and falsely accused of espionage.

For that family, the settlement closes a two-decade effort to clear the name of a husband and father whom the regime branded a spy. Their case was part of a wider legal battle over hidden Iranian assets in the United States, and over whether a prominent Manhattan skyscraper, held through charitable and corporate structures, was serving the interests of the Iranian state.

The lawyer who helped turn the case into a precedent-setting legal action was Zohreh Mizrahi, a respected immigration and human rights lawyer who succeeded in proving that the espionage allegations used to justify his arrest and execution were false. “The family wanted to clear the husband’s or the father’s name,” Mizrahi said. “For a military man to be accused of treason or espionage, it’s a heavy responsibility, a stigma.”

April 16 - British counterterrorism police have arrested three people after an apparent attempted arson attack near the London studios of Iran International, a Persian-language broadcaster that has long been the target of threats linked to Tehran and its proxies.

Police said an ignited container was thrown toward the outlet’s offices in northwest London on Wednesday evening. The device landed in a nearby parking lot, where the fire went out on its own. No one was injured, and no damage was reported.

In a statement, Iran International said the incident began around 8:15 p.m., when a “suspicious vehicle” was refused entry at the main gate of its site. Soon after, incendiary devices were thrown into the parking area of a neighboring building, just a few yards from its studios. The outlet said its security team responded immediately before police and firefighters arrived.

The Metropolitan Police said Thursday that the case is not currently being treated as terrorism, though it is being handled by Counter Terrorism Policing London. Investigators said the motives of those arrested have not yet been established.

The attempted attack is the latest in a string of violent or suspicious incidents in London that have alarmed British security officials. Last month, several ambulances belonging to Hatzola, a Jewish volunteer emergency service, were set on fire while parked near a synagogue in Golders Green, north London. Officials said that despite the similarities, they are treating the three recent incidents separately for now.

“We are fully aware that they are all similar in nature,” Vicki Evans, senior national coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, told reporters. She said Britain faces “an unprecedented level of national security investigations,” some with suspected links to foreign states and “dangerous and often reckless intentions.”
