WASHINGTON, June 14 (Reuters) – With an agreement on a framework for a peace deal with Iran, U.S. President Donald Trump may have found a way to begin extricating himself from an unpopular war while setting global markets on a path toward easing energy prices that have spiked during the crisis.

But he has settled for a deal that appears short of many of the goals he outlined in the early days of the conflict, potentially opening himself up to attacks from hawks in his own party and leaving the U.S. looking strategically worse off than it did before he went to war.

More than three months after attacking the Islamic Republic, Trump on Sunday gave his approval to a “memorandum of understanding” that marks the most significant breakthrough in peace talks so far, including Iran’s commitment to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, which could help lower high U.S. gasoline prices.

LONDON, June 14 (Reuters) – The U.S.-Iran deal ending months of fighting and reopening the Strait of Hormuz will prompt a collective sigh of relief from energy exporters and importers alike. But the fragile calm may not prevent future flare-ups, casting doubt over how quickly – or fully – tanker traffic through the vital waterway can return to normal.

Under the agreement announced late on Sunday, Iran and the U.S. agreed to lift their blockades on the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly a fifth of global oil and LNG flowed before the war broke out on February 28. The strait is expected to reopen once both sides formally sign the accord on Friday.

That is obviously good news for supply-strapped energy markets, but the deal leaves unresolved the key disputes that triggered the U.S. and Israeli bombing campaign against Iran, including the future of Tehran’s nuclear program. That ambiguity opens significant room for confusion, disagreement and renewed confrontation.
