Dec. 28 – Iran could look to build a nuclear weapon following its weakened military and political power in the Middle East, according to a statement by the White House.
The Islamic Republic and its proxy groups have been embroiled in a conflict with Israel for over one year, resulting in heavy military, financial and strategic losses for the theocracy in the region.
Iran has continuously denied that it wants to acquire a nuclear weapon and has said its nuclear program is peaceful.
Members of Hezbollah and Iran’s volunteer paramilitary group the Basij, took part in a protest in Tehran, to demonstrate against the government’s decision to lift internet bans on platforms including WhatsApp and Google Play.
The small march, which took place after Friday prayers in Tehran and included a motorcade, was noticed by social media users.
One poster suggested the march signified the end of the Islamic Republic, while other social media users questioned the usefulness of the protest.
And an Italian journalist is believed to have been arrested in Iran, according to Italy’s foreign ministry.
Cecilia Sala was arrested by police in Tehran on Dec. 19, however Iranian officials have not confirmed the arrest.
The 29-year-old is being held in solitary confinement in Evin prison in Tehran and no reason has been given for her arrest.
