Flash Briefing: Aug. 30, 2024


Aug. 30 – Technology company Meta, said it had identified possible hacking attempts by Iran into WhatsApp accounts of U.S. officials working for President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump.

The hackers are believed to be from the same group which targeted Trump’s campaign earlier this month.

The group, known as APT42, is widely believed to be connected to an intelligence division inside Iran’s military which is known to place surveillance software on the mobile phones of its victims.

Iran’s government signaled a willingness to resume nuclear talks with the US this week, which appeared to be endorsed by religious leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Iran’s new president, Masoud Pezeshkian pledged to restart the negotiations during his election campaign.The promise aims to put a deal back on track which provides sanctions relief in exchange for restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program.

Responding to the comments, Washington said the deal “was not currently on the agenda.”

And the Islamic Republic carried out its first public hanging this year, according to a report by monitoring body Iran Human Rights.

The individual has been identified as 21-year-old Amirreza Ajam Akrami, who had been on death row for a year.

Iran Human Rights called the execution “inhumane, cruel and degrading.”
