In 1958, Shojaeddin Shafa first proposed a celebra In 1958, Shojaeddin Shafa first proposed a celebration marking the 2,500th anniversary of the founding of the Persian Empire by Cyrus the Great. But who was the man behind the idea? A journalist, literary critic and prolific translator, Shafa began translating European literature into Persian at just 18. Over the following two decades, his translations included works by Chateaubriand, Victor Hugo, Goethe and Dante, while his own scholarship explored the influence of Iranian culture on European literature. His Iran dar Adabiyat-e Faranseh (Iran in French Literature) became one of his most celebrated works of the 1950s. Shafa’s career also extended into politics and public life. After early involvement in nationalist politics, he briefly served as director of the press and radio department under Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddeq, accompanying him on his 1951 visit to the United States. In 1957, Shafa was appointed press and cultural adviser to the Imperial Court and its official spokesperson. He subsequently headed the Court’s newly established Cultural Centre and, over the next two decades, became a central figure in its cultural initiatives, from the Imperial Cultural Council and Pahlavi National Library to the International Union of Iranologists. His first major proposal at the Court was also one of the most ambitious: a celebration honouring the founding of the Persian Empire—an idea that would ultimately develop into the 1971 celebrations. By Timothy Gardner WASHINGTON, Oct 1 (Reuters) – T By Timothy Gardner WASHINGTON, Oct 1 (Reuters) – The Trump administration imposed sanctions on Iran‘s rail and auto sectors and their foreign suppliers, the Treasury Department said on Thursday, widening its wartime economic campaign to isolate Tehran. The sanctions are part of the department’s “Operation Economic Outcast,” announced August 24, which aims to cut Tehran’s funding for the war, missile construction, cyberattacks and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps or IRGC. Themove extends US economic pressure on Iran from sea to land, targeting sectors Tehran has leaned on since a naval blockade cut off its oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz. But the expanding sanctions risk inflicting severe costs on ordinary Iranians, one analyst said. The US blockade of Iranian ports has forced Tehran to rely more on autos and rail for transporting petroleum, fertilizer, chemicals and other goods. Thursday’s sanctions target those alternatives, according to the Treasury Department. The sanctions designate Iran Khodro Company, or IKCO, and SAIPA Iranian Automobile Manufacturing Company, or SAIPA. Treasury said the two companies represent more than 90% of Iran‘s domestic auto market.
