DUBAI/CAIRO, Oct 31 (Reuters) – Iranian negotiators held talks in Doha with Qatari mediators on Saturday to discuss paths out of war in the Persian Gulf, a source told Reuters, as diplomats try to avert a new outbreak of fighting after the US midterm elections this week.

Saturday’s talks in the Qatari capital followed more than 12 hours of discussions on Friday between Iranian and Qatari envoys in Tehran, said the source, who was briefed on the negotiations and spoke on condition of anonymity. The source said the talks were being coordinated in regular contacts with Washington.

Countries in the region have been anticipating that US President Donald Trump, who has held off on strikes on Iran during the weeks leading up to Tuesday’s midterm elections, could restart attacks once the voting is over. Iran has repeatedly said it would respond to new attacks by striking at US and Israeli targets in neighbouring countries.

Iran‘s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei issued a statement on Saturday ordering the armed forces to be prepared to respond to any attacks. The Iranian military later announced it was taking steps to improve its readiness.

“Any level or type of threat must be met with an immediate, impactful, and geographically unrestricted response,” Khamenei, who has not appeared in public since replacing his father slain at the war’s outset, said on Saturday in the statement posted on his official Telegram account.

He said that senior commanders had reported high readiness along the Persian Gulf coast, in and around the Strait of Hormuz and Gulf of Oman, and on Iran‘s northwestern and southeastern borders.

Oct. 31 - The West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval is

Oct. 31 - The West Hollywood Halloween Carnaval is a free street party that takes over Santa Monica Boulevard tonight, Saturday, October 31, 2026, from 6 to 11 p.m. It runs between N. Doheny Drive and La Cienega Boulevard and is one of the largest Halloween street celebrations in the world.

The city launched it in 1987, and it has become a showcase for costume design, LGBTQ+ culture, and self-expression. Tens of thousands of costumed revelers fill the boulevard, with stages, DJs, and food trucks.

Organizers recommend leaving kids and pets at home because it gets crowded and risqué, and they urge people to take rideshares or public transit. No alcohol or public drinking is allowed on the street, so the bars and restaurants nearby host the after-parties.

Oct 29 (Reuters) – US President Donald Trump said that Vice President JD Vance’s outreach to Iran was about helping the country get medical supplies, after US media reported Vance had written to Tehran’s top security official to revive peace talks.

Tehran has received a letter from Vance but it has not responded to it yet, Iran‘s semi-official Tasnim news agency reported on Thursday.

Vance sent the letter to Iranian Security Council chief Mohsen Rezaei in a bid to revive peace negotiations, the Wall Street Journal and the New York Times reported on Wednesday, citing US officials and people familiar with the matter. Reuters could not immediately verify the reports.

The Wall Street Journal reported that Vance sent the letter at Trump’s direction. When asked by reporters later on Wednesday if he directed Vance to reach out to Iran to restart peace negotiations, Trump said: “No.”

“What that is is they need help with medical supplies and various things. He (Vance) asked me what I thought. I said, if you want to do that, that’s okay. Basically, it’s getting supplies in to help people that are not well,” Trump told reporters.

Iran‘s mission to the United Nations in New York did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the letter and Trump’s remark. Vance’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The United States and Israel launched a war against Iran at the end of February. The US has also since imposed a naval blockade on Iran to starve it of oil export revenue and escalated efforts to economically isolate Iran.

Iran has long blamed US sanctions for hindering civilian access to medical supplies.

RAWALPINDI, Pakistan, Oct 30 (Reuters) – Pakistan’s military is “cautiously optimistic” about its mediation between Iran and the United States, its spokesman said on Friday in his first interview since a high-level delegation visited Tehran this week.

Army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir — Pakistan’s chief mediator in its efforts to de-escalate the now eight-month-old Iran war — has been to Tehran twice this month, most recently on Monday alongside Saudi and Turkish officials.

“Why would the Field Marshal be going twice if it is not for some positivity? So yes, of course,” spokesman Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said when asked whether the trips were a positive sign.

“The word that we would use is always cautiously optimistic,” added Chaudhry, director general of Inter-Services Public Relations.

There were still “powerful spoilers and detractors,” who believed conflict serves them, he added without naming them.

Speaking in the garrison city of Rawalpindi, where Pakistan’s armed forces are headquartered, Chaudhry declined to say what was discussed or whether the United States had backed the trip.

Saudi Defence Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman and Turkish intelligence chief Ibrahim Kalin joined Munir in Tehran on Monday.

Their two countries signed a joint defence pact with Pakistan on August 7, saying an attack on any signatory will be treated as an attack on all.

The Mecca Joint Defence Agreement has taken on added significance as the Iran war has redrawn regional alliances and raised fears of a broader Middle East conflict.

While the three signatories say the agreement is aimed at collective deterrence and regional security, analysts see its evolution as closely tied to efforts by regional powers to manage the fallout from the Iran-US confrontation.

Oct. 30 - The Islamic Republic insists that Iran’s malaise is due to the war and sanctions. But the forces debilitating Iran are rooted at home: misplaced priorities, chronic mismanagement, systemic corruption, and unremitting repression.

For decades, the regime has poured resources into ballistic missiles, the nuclear program, and security institutions such as the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, at the expense of public services: schools, roads, power networks, and water systems, etc.

Iran’s most enduring threat is not beyond its borders; it is the Islamic Republic’s own rule, failing to put Iran’s national interests first.

WASHINGTON, Oct 30 (Reuters) – US President Donald

WASHINGTON, Oct 30 (Reuters) – US President Donald Trump, speaking ahead of November 3 midterm congressional elections, said on Friday he believed the war with Iran will end soon, but did not say how that would happen.

“It’s going to get wrapped up soon,” Trump said in an interview with Kansas City radio station KCMO. “We need a guarantee there’ll never be a nuclear weapon.”

Trump has said the US would not strike Iran before the elections.
