GENEVA, Aug 5 (Reuters) – At least 56 people have been executed in Iran on national security-related charges since March 19, including 27 in cases linked to protests at the start of the year, United Nations human rights chief Volker Tuerk said on Wednesday.

“I am alarmed by the rise in executions and death sentences issued in Iran since March, and that capital punishment continues to be used to instil fear among the population and suppress dissent,” Tuerk said in a statement.

Iranian authorities killed thousands of people during anti-government protests in January, Iran‘s worst domestic unrest in decades.

Rights groups say the government has continued to crack down on opponents during the war – sparked by U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran since the end of February.

Tuerk said more than 100 people face the risk of execution on similar security-related charges, while executions for drug-related offences were also continuing at an “alarming rate.”

He urged Tehran to halt all executions, move towards abolishing the death penalty and raised concerns about what he described as failures to uphold fair trial and due process.

Iran‘s diplomatic mission in Geneva did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Iranian officials have defended the country’s judicial processes and the use of capital punishment as consistent with domestic law and necessary for public security.

Aug 6 (Reuters) – Israel said two of its soldiers were killed in southern Lebanon on Wednesday while Lebanese authorities said Israeli retaliatory attacks killed at least one person, a flare-up in violence that coincided with the latest round of talks between the two countries.

The Rome talks, which began on Tuesday and are expected to continue through Thursday, come after the two countries agreed in June to a U.S.-brokered security arrangement intended to ease hostilities along the border.

Despite the ceasefire, Israel declared a buffer zone in southern Lebanon where its troops continue to operate to eliminate what it says is the threat of the Iran-backed group, Hezbollah, on its border.

The two soldiers were killed and four others wounded by an explosion in a building they had entered as part of a security sweep, according to Israel’s Army Radio on Thursday.

Citing a security source, Army Radio said that it was still unclear when the explosive device had been planted in the building, whether it was before or after the ceasefire.

The Israeli military on Wednesday initially described the incident as “a blatant ceasefire violation” by Hezbollah, for which it launched a series of retaliatory strikes in southern Lebanon.

But on Thursday, in a statement mourning the death of the soldiers, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz did not mention Hezbollah or a ceasefire violation, suggesting Israel was not looking to escalate attacks.

The Israeli military’s website shows the last date a soldier was killed in southern Lebanon was June 28.

The Lebanese health ministry said on Wednesday one person was killed and 12 others were wounded in an Israeli strike on the southern town of Tibnin, about 25 km (15 miles) from Mansouri, for which the Israeli military had issued an evacuation warning – the first online warning for Lebanon in more than a month.

Aug 5 (Reuters) – Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said in an interview aired by state TV on Wednesday that interaction with the country’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei is currently “very difficult”.

Mojtaba has not made any public appearances since he became supreme leader, replacing his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in one of the first strikes launched against Iran by the U.S. and Israel.

Aug 5 (Reuters) – Iran has warned the Persian Gulf states that any new U.S. attack on its territory would trigger retaliation against critical energy infrastructure across the region, according to five sources, as Tehran seeks to raise the cost of military action by threatening Washington’s closest regional allies.

The warning was delivered through a flurry of high-level diplomatic contacts after President Donald Trump threatened on July 28 to strike Iran‘s energy network and infrastructure, the sources said.

Two senior Iranian officials, two Persian Gulf sources and a senior regional diplomat with knowledge of the discussions said Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi spoke with his Saudi, Turkish and Qatari counterparts, as well as Pakistan’s army chief. All spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter.

Araqchi urged Washington’s Persian Gulf allies to use their influence with Trump to dissuade him from launching renewed strikes, the senior diplomat said, warning that any attack on Iran would prompt retaliation against U.S. assets and energy facilities across the Persian Gulf.

His message was consistent in every conversation, the diplomat said: “We’re ready to retaliate, but finding a diplomatic solution is the best way to avoid wider escalation and destruction across the region.”

DUBAI/RIYADH, Aug 5 (Reuters) – A proposed deal between Iran and Oman would give Tehran control over ships entering the Persian Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz, a senior Iranian source and two regional officials told Reuters on Wednesday, in one of the biggest concessions yet to Iran.

Despite the apparent step towards yielding to Iranian demands, the sources pushed back against assertions by U.S. President Donald Trump that a deal reopening the strait was imminent.

“The concession has already been made regarding some form of control over Hormuz,” one of the regional sources told Reuters.

The other regional source said there were still details to be determined about how “control” would be defined, with Persian Gulf negotiators insisting regional countries supervise inspections of ships, and that any payment of fees be voluntary.

The senior Iranian source said the text of an agreement already on the table envisioned Iran having control of ships heading into the Persian Gulf through the strait, and one of the main sticking points was what role Iran would also have over ships heading in the opposite direction.

Iran‘s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei described the negotiations between Tehran and Muscat as “professional” and “moving forward”.

“The two sides had reached a mutual understanding on the geographical parameters of the route under discussion,” he said.

Aug 5 (Reuters) – The U.S. Treasury said on Wednesday it had removed counter-terrorism sanctions from Iraq’s Fly Baghdad Airlines and two aircraft that were imposed in 2024 over links to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force, citing changes in the airline’s behavior.

A Treasury official said that the move was not indicative of any shift in U.S. policy towards Iran‘s government, the Islamic Revolutionary Guards or any organization designated as terrorist and was unrelated to U.S. negotiations with Iran over a possible deal to end hostilities in the Persian Gulf.

The removal of Fly Baghdad Airlines Co (FBA), Iraq Express and two Boeing 737 aircraft from the Treasury’s Specially Designated Nationals list was part of the Office of Foreign Assets Control’s process to reconsider sanctions after behavior changes, the official said.

“FBA has demonstrated major changes to their operations such that their listing is no longer warranted,” the official said. “They have addressed sanctionable conduct.”

No details were provided on the specific FBA changes that warranted the lifting of sanctions, and the official said that sanctions could be reimposed at any time.
