Oct 3 (Reuters) – A large plume of smoke and fire

Oct 3 (Reuters) – A large plume of smoke and fire was seen rising in the vicinity of an Aramco facility in Riyadh on Saturday, a witness told Reuters.

There was no immediate confirmation from Saudi authorities about the fire. Aramco did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The fire comes amid escalating hostilities between Saudi Arabia and Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis, who have stepped up attacks on Saudi cities and energy infrastructure.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for Saturday’s fire.

The Houthis said last week they had attacked Saudi Aramco facilities in Yanbu with missiles and drones. Saudi Arabia said at the time that it had intercepted six ballistic missiles fired by the Houthis towards Taif and the Yanbu area, but did not report damage to Aramco facilities

DUBAI, Oct 3 (Reuters) – Iran‘s rial continued its

DUBAI, Oct 3 (Reuters) – Iran‘s rial continued its decline on Saturday, as the central bank announced an injection of up to $2 billion to support the currency while the economy faces US sanctions and a naval blockade.

The US dollar was sold around 2.688 million rials, up from 2.632 million on Friday, according to free-market tracking website bon-bast.com, while alanchand.com reported 2.695 million rials per dollar.

State television said state banks began selling up to $2 billion to support the currency, which has lost more than half of its value in the past year.

With an inflation rate of more than 70%, life is becoming ever tougher for ordinary citizens unable to afford basic necessities or rent as a US blockade cuts the state’s financial lifeline – oil exports.

Many Iranians seeking safe havens for their savings have been buying dollars, other hard currencies or gold.

Mehdi Darabi, an aide to the central bank’s governor on foreign exchange affairs, blamed the decline of the rial partly on what he said were false predictions by US officials of the collapse of the Iranian economy.

“It is suggested that the Iranian economy is about to crash… The enemy is using this to affect the exchange rate of our currency,” Darabi told state TV, adding that the current fall of the rial was temporary.

LISBON, Oct 3 (Reuters) – Portuguese prosecutors s

LISBON, Oct 3 (Reuters) – Portuguese prosecutors said on Saturday they had opened a probe into the legality of the centre-right government’s authorisation of the United States’ use of the Lajes Air Base in the Azores during the Iran conflict, following a complaint by an opposition party.

A longstanding agreement with the US allows Washington to use the base without prior authorisation during peacetime, but requires Portugal to give approval once hostilities begin.

Portugal, unlike neighbouring Spain, authorised several US transit flights through the Lajes air base, a decision that drew criticism from left-wing opposition parties and triggered a political debate over Lisbon’s role in operations linked to the conflict with Iran.

In a statement, the Prosecutor General’s Office said “the probe was opened following a complaint filed by members of the Left Bloc party,” without providing further details.

Portugal’s Foreign Ministry declined to comment.

The Left Bloc asked prosecutors in April to investigate the US use of the Lajes base, arguing it amounted to a “gross violation of international law.”

However, Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel has said Portugal was not involved in the conflict and that the use of the Lajes base complied with international law, having been authorised only after assurances from Washington that any operation would be defensive, necessary and proportionate, and limited to military targets.

Portugal’s prosecutors are bound by the principle of legality, requiring them to investigate alleged wrongdoing when there are sufficient grounds to do so, unlike in some jurisdictions where prosecutors have broader discretion to decide whether a case should proceed.

The Lajes base, located in Portugal’s Atlantic Azores archipelago, is a strategic transit hub for US forces under a bilateral defence treaty dating back to 1951 and hosts the 65th Air Base Wing of the US Air Force, providing support for US, NATO and allied operations.

Oct 3 (Reuters) – Iran has executed a man detained

Oct 3 (Reuters) – Iran has executed a man detained during protests in January for allegedly firing at police, the judiciary said on Saturday.

The judiciary said Siavash Jamshidi Kheirabadi fired at least three shots at police on January 8 and was arrested two days later with a handgun in Shahrekord in southwestern Iran.

It accused him of contacting people online to organise “anti-security” activities and seeking payment for a “mission”, without identifying who was purported to be behind it.

The protests erupted on December 28, 2025, over economic hardship and swelled into widespread demonstrations calling for the end of clerical rule in the Islamic Republic.

Iran blamed armed groups and operatives backed by the US and Israel for involvement in the protests and for some of the violence.

Israeli Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu acknowledged during the protests that Israel had operatives inside Iran. He said they aimed to weaken Iran‘s capabilities, though he denied they were directly working to topple the leadership.

LONDON, Oct 2 (Reuters) – Two Iranian nationals we

LONDON, Oct 2 (Reuters) – Two Iranian nationals were charged in Britain with preparing a terrorist attack against the Jewish community in northern England, police said on Friday, amid heightened tension over a separate suspected plot targeting a US-linked military base.

Rahman Salehi, 35, and Salam Ahmadyan, 36, have been charged with preparing to commit or assisting another to commit an act of terrorism in Manchester on the eve of Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar.

Britain has seen a significant rise in antisemitism since the Hamas attacks on Israel in October 2023 that triggered the subsequent war in Gaza, including a series of attacks on Jewish sites in London earlier this year.

“It is no secret that this country faces a range of serious threats from the Iranian regime,” Home Secretary (interior minister) Shabana Mahmood said in a statement. “They target our Jewish communities and try to silence their critics overseas, often through proxies and criminal networks to hide their involvement.”

Iran has always denied such accusations.

Counterterrorism police said Salehi and Ahmadyan had allegedly tried to acquire components and equipment to make an improvised explosive device and conducted reconnaissance on potential targets for attack.

Police also said the two men had allegedly been in contact with an overseas third party who might be in Iran.

Oct 2 (Reuters) – US President Donald Trump’s top

Oct 2 (Reuters) – US President Donald Trump’s top cabinet members met secretly at the presidential retreat at Camp David to discuss next steps in the Iran war and the Saudi-Houthi conflict in Yemen, Axios reported on Friday.

Vice President Vance chaired the meeting, the news outlet reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
