WASHINGTON, Nov 2 (Reuters) – US President Donald Trump raised doubts on Monday about whether he would follow through on a threatened resumption of military strikes against Iran and said a deal with Tehran could happen.

Trump in recent weeks had hinted about renewing attacks on Iran after the US midterm elections on Tuesday. But after a speech at the Washington Reflecting Pool on Monday, he indicated he might be thinking otherwise.

Asked by reporters if he was considering striking Iran after the midterms, Trump replied “no.”

The Iran war is a leading cause of high gasoline prices that are weighing on voters and Trump is under pressure to end the conflict.

ABU DHABI, Nov 2 (Reuters) – The UAE will protect its energy infrastructure and invest in new export routes, storage capacity abroad and shipping fleets to be better prepared for the US-Israeli war on Iran, its energy minister said on Monday.

Minister Suhail al-Mazrouei said the course of the war could not be predicted, but the UAE would be more prepared than before.

The UAE has been exporting crude via Fujairah, which sits just outside the Strait of Hormuz. It is building a new pipeline to Fujairah that will double crude capacity by next year.

“I think after this crisis, many companies are going to look, think again, and design, redesign their facilities to be more resilient in the future,” Mazrouei told reporters on the sidelines of the Abu Dhabi International Petroleum Exhibition and Conference.

“Resilience is a big word. And it has layers, from the barrel that you produce to the destination that you take it,” he said, adding: “You need to be closer to your customers.”

Mazrouei earlier told the conference that at certain times his country’s exports were higher than prior to the war.

Reuters had reported in June that the UAE boosted crude oil and condensate exports to a record high, shortly after it left the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries.

DUBAI, Nov 2 (Reuters) – Contacts between Iran and the United States to end their eight-month war are continuing, Tehran said on Monday, after days of Iranian talks with Qatari mediators ended with altered proposals but no breakthrough.

“Consultations through mediators are very intensive. We have presented our conditions and proposals and everything depends on the political rationality of Washington,” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said in comments carried by state media outlet IRNA.

Amid fears the conflict could reignite after Tuesday’s midterm elections in the United States, China and Russia both spoke out on Monday against the possibility of renewed military action in a war that has hit the global economy.

Tehran continued to resist outreach and regional mediation to break the logjam with Washington, as its proxies ramped up pressure in the region and beyond. The U.S. offered openings for talks, even as Tehran dismissed Qatar’s proposals, threatened Persian Gulf communications cables, and insisted on sanctions relief before nuclear negotiations. Houthi attacks and Hezbollah’s rearmament heightened doubts about prospects for restraint. Reuters exposed military supply networks evading sanctions, while Western authorities warned of security threats on their soil. Inside Iran, families cut essentials as prices soared, a rights group reported death sentences for 18 Isfahan protesters, and filmmaker Jafar Panahi received a prison sentence.

By @katayoonhalajan
Nov 2 - The Menart fair — the only art fair in Europe devoted entirely to modern and contemporary art from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region — held its seventh edition from Oct. 22 to 25, with Iranian artists and gallerists featuring prominently.

Thirty-four galleries from 18 countries showing works by 105 artists came together from Oct. 22 to 25 at the Menart Art Fair, which was founded in 2021 by Laure d’Hauteville. The theme of this year’s fair was “Where is home?” and half of the exhibiting artists were women.

Among Iranian artists exhibiting was sculptor Atousa Vahdani, who has lived in Paris for around three years and exhibited with Negah Gallery. Her work focuses on women.

“I mostly work on social subjects, and my focus is on the lives of women in Iran,” she said. “I do not look at women’s problems only from a political angle; I also examine them from a cultural one. The collection I am showing here is titled ‘Message in a Bottle’ and is inspired by the real stories of women. For me, it is like writing a message in the depths of despair, putting it in a bottle, and entrusting it to the water in the hope that somewhere, someone might read it.”

“When I was in Iran and was not permitted to hold an exhibition, I secretly made these figures in the privacy of my own studio and placed them in bottles, hoping that one day these messages would be read and the stories of these women would be heard. The other piece on display here is from the series ‘Woman, Now and Henceforth,’ which I began in 2010. For this series, I took casts of women’s bodies and covered them with termeh (a traditional handwoven fabric).”

By @katayoonhalajan
Nov 2 - Vanya Chokrollahi is a Paris-based film director, actor and writer who recently made his debut as a theater director with a production of Shakespeare’s tragedy “Macbeth” — inspired by the Iranian tradition of pardeh-khani, where a storyteller narrates a tale in front of a painted canvas.

Paris-based artists Vitalia Samuilova and Nathan Harbon painted the large canvas that serves as a backdrop to the production, which is being performed in Paris through November after being staged in Paris and other cities as of last year.

Chokrollahi has made about 20 short and medium-length films. He co-directed his first feature-length film, the documentary “Paris, a Day in May,” with Romain Rampillon, released in 2024.

He founded his theater company Le Bateau Noir (The Black Boat) in 2023 in Paris. The company has since won the support of theater companies Compagniemia and La Fonderie, which are also on a quest for a type of theater that is attuned to the intellectual and social currents of our time. Working with masks is another strand of their artistic project.

Asked how a tragedy written in the 17th century can still be staged today and feel so immediate, Chokrollahi said:

“The very fact that we ask this question is a confession about our times, about our political and social climate, and about the darkness that has settled over us. Macbeth explores the fear that echoes through our society and the violence of ordinary people, whether voiced openly or buried deep in the human heart, as well as the violence of governments. The play’s universality lies in the human soul’s twists and turns and the terrifying masks it wears.

By Kayhan Life Staff
Nov 2 - The World Bank has projected that Iran’s poverty rate will climb to 38.4 percent this year because of price pressures that have pushed the nation’s inflation rate to 74.2 rate. In its new Macro Poverty Outlook, a country-by-country analysis and forecast for the developing world, it estimates that the income levels of more than 2.6 million additional Iranians will fall below the poverty line in 2027.

These estimates rely on the Islamic Republic of Iran’s official statistics. Many experts believe that actual inflation rates exceed official figures, and that the number of people living in poverty may be higher.

The World Bank said the poverty rate stood at 36 percent in fiscal year 2023, 35.1 percent in 2024, and 35.5 percent in 2025. The bank added that real per capita income in 2025 remained roughly at the levels recorded 15 years earlier.

The World Bank estimates that Iran’s real gross domestic product (GDP) will contract by 7.7 percent in fiscal year 2026, following an estimated decline of 0.9 percent in 2025. Average annual inflation is expected to rise from 49.1 percent in 2025 to 74.2 percent in 2026, while the budget deficit is expected to widen from 3.2 percent to 5.8 percent of GDP.

Persistent inflation and the declining value of the national currency are steadily eroding workers’ real incomes and purchasing power, despite the fact that workers’ wages do tend to increase each year. As a result, wage earners can afford less and less with their monthly pay.

Sociologist Abbas Kazemi said the sharp decline in wage earners’ purchasing power meant that Iranian society was on the verge of a kind of “bureaucratic collapse,” in which wages lose so much value that working becomes economically pointless for many government and service-sector employees.

Kazemi pointed to the low salaries of teachers, nurses, and clerical workers, and warned that continued currency devaluation could eventually push commuting costs to the point where they equaled a person’s income, leaving employees unable to afford the trip to work.

By Kayhan Life Staff
Nov. 2 - Between Aug. 23 and Oct. 22, 38 women and children in Iran were killed by family members in incidents of domestic violence, according to a report in the Tehran-based newspaper Sharq. Experts said economic hardship and psychological burnout were key drivers of the violence.

According to Sharq, 13 of the victims were children and teenagers under the age of 18. In most cases, the perpetrator was the victim’s husband, ex-husband, or male relative.

Citing experts in social harm and social sciences, the report said: “Many of these murders happened after months or years of domestic violence, and the warning signs were visible before the crime. For this reason, institutions such as the Judiciary, the State Welfare Organization of Iran (SWO), and the Vice Presidency for Women’s and Family Affairs should show greater sensitivity to these crimes.”

According to Sharq, a motive was reported in only some of the cases. In four cases, the killings followed the woman’s request for a divorce or separation. In five others, reports cited family disputes or repeated domestic violence before the killings.

In several other cases, the reported motives pointed to a desire for control. A 26-year-old woman was killed by her 50-year-old husband for “neglecting housework,” while a 70-year-old woman was strangled by her husband for speaking to a stranger in the street.

In Kermanshah, in western Iran, a father shot his 16-year-old daughter dead as she slept because she had opposed a forced marriage. She had been forced to leave school after the fourth grade. In roughly half of the cases, no motive was reported.

The report added that many of the killings were particularly brutal. Two women, one in Mashhad in northeastern Iran and the other in Isfahan in central Iran, were beheaded by their husbands. In the Mashhad case, the woman’s two young children were also killed, and the perpetrator then took his own life.

Another woman in Mashhad was stabbed and then set on fire. In Tehran’s Khak-Sefid neighborhood, officially known as Golshan, a woman died in a deliberately set house fire after asking for a divorce.
