Oct. 8 - Iranian defense attorney Bahareh Aghaei, held in Qarchak Prison in Varamin, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison on charges including “propaganda activities against national security,” according to reports. Branch 26 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court convicted her after she supported protesters during the January 2026 demonstrations, attended the 40th-day memorial for protester Sepehr Shokri, and assisted families seeking justice. Her case reflects a wider crackdown on Iran’s independent human rights lawyers, who are increasingly jailed or barred from practice on vague, politically motivated charges.

WASHINGTON, Oct 8 (Reuters) – The United States on Thursday imposed fresh Iran-related sanctions, targeting dozens of people, entities and vessels, according to the Treasury Department website.

DUBAI, Oct 8 (Reuters) – Iran will not abandon ura

DUBAI, Oct 8 (Reuters) – Iran will not abandon uranium enrichment or hand over its uranium, state media reported on Thursday, citing the head of the country’s Atomic Energy Organization Mohammad Eslami, after the US said Iran must make “meaningful” reductions in its enrichment capacity.

Dismissing renewed US threats against Iran‘s nuclear facilities as “nothing new”, Eslami said enrichment was “an inseparable part” of the nuclear process.

Eslami’s comments come as Iran and the United States exchanged proposals in recent weeks aimed at ending the war and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy shipping route.

Iran‘s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on Thursday that Iran could reply within days to a US response to Iran‘s proposal under which the Strait of Hormuz could be reopened within seven days if necessary conditions were met.

“Enrichment is an integral part of the nuclear process, and we will not abandon it in any way. How can you claim to have a nuclear industry if you don’t have the starting point of the process? The nuclear industry is the driving force of science and technology,” Eslami added.

US President Donald Trump said later on Thursday that the United States is having productive discussions with Iran and will not launch any attack before the US midterm congressional elections in November.

WASHINGTON, Oct 8 (Reuters) – US President Donald Trump said on Thursday the United States is having productive discussions with Iran and will not launch an attack on the country before US midterm congressional elections in November.

“We are having productive discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social. He said the US blockade of Iranian ports remains in effect and that oil is flowing through the Strait of Hormuz.

“We will not be attacking Iran at any time prior to the Midterm Elections to be held in the United States on November 3rd,” Trump said.

The United States and Israel launched strikes on Iran in February and the war — and its $3 billion monthly price tag — has become a key issue on the US campaign trail.

Trump has repeatedly said he expected oil prices to drop sharply after the elections, but high gas prices and the Iran war are weighing heavily on Republican candidates and threatening their congressional majority.

Iran and the US have exchanged proposals in recent weeks aimed at ending the war and reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy shipping route. Trump rejected Tehran’s latest offer.

ISTANBUL, Turkey, Oct 8 (Reuters) – Iran’s government has withstood months of attacks by the United States and Israel. Its resilience isn’t limited to the battlefield. The Islamic Republic’s repressive security and judicial apparatus is hunting down dissident Iranians inside and outside the country, Reuters has found.

On television and online, the cost of opposition plays endlessly on state media. A video confession. A re-enactment of a treasonous crime. News of yet another execution of one of the thousands of Iranians detained after mass anti-government protests in January.

Many Iranians say it’s working: People tempted to take to the streets are paralyzed with fear.

BERLIN, Oct 8 (Reuters) – Iranian intelligence ser

BERLIN, Oct 8 (Reuters) – Iranian intelligence services are targeting US military installations in Germany, including Ramstein and Spangdahlem air bases, amid concerns over potential covert attacks linked to the Iran conflict, news outlet WirtschaftsWoche reported on Thursday.

Israel warned US and German partners three weeks ago of a potential threat, with concern focused on bases supporting American military operations and logistics linked to the conflict with Iran, the report said, citing several unnamed Western intelligence officials.

The Iranian and Israeli embassies in Berlin did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The German defence ministry declined comment.

“It is inappropriate to discuss matters of intelligence, and we will not comment on specific threat reporting or force protection measures,” a US European Command Spokesperson said. “US European Command remains vigilant and continuously assesses the security environment across the European theater.”

A source told Reuters that Germany has been monitoring increased Iranian activity for weeks, without referencing what was mentioned in the WirtschaftsWoche article in particular.

The US said on Monday that a threat linked to Iran had prompted the removal of American B-1 bombers from British air base RAF Fairford.
