Global Trade Union Condemns Mass Arrests of Workers in Iran

Kayhan Life,28 December – IndustriALL Global Union, an international union representing 50 million workers in 140 countries in the mining, energy and manufacturing sectors, has written to the government of Iran condemning the arrest of more than 40 striking workers at the Ahvaz Steel complex.

The workers were apprehended in their homes by Iranian security forces over the course of several raids on the 17th and 18th of December.

This latest action by IndustriALL Global Union follows a letter signed by over 180 Iranian activists to international labor organizations, pleading with them to “hear the voice of the oppressed Iranian workers and take the necessary measures for their support.”

According to the letter, “the greatest grievance of the protesting workers in Iran is that there is no one to hear their voice and answer their calls.”

The activists argued “the families of these workers are among the weakest segments of society” and “are at a loss where to seek refuge.”
