Speaking at the Council on Foreign Relations in New York on Wednesday (December 18), Blinken said the Iranian regime should stop getting involved in “misadventures throughout the region and beyond.”
“There’s no doubt this has not been a good year for Iran. And we’re seeing that play out every single day. And I think Iran has to make some fundamental choices. One choice it could make and should make is to focus on itself and focus on trying to build a better, more successful country that delivers for its people, which is clearly what most Iranians want, and to stop getting involved in these adventures and misadventures throughout the region and beyond.”
“And we have clear security threats emanating from Iran. And we have clear values threats emanating from Iran. What we’ve tried to do at different points in time is to the best of our ability, further empower people inside Iran who want a different future for the country.”
Blinken also emphasized the importance for the incoming Trump administration of maintaining efforts to prevent ISIS from reemerging in Syria, and expressed his concerns about the reconstruction of Gaza if and when a ceasefire is achieved and all hostages are freed.
