Oct. 11 – The head of Iran’s Quds Force, a key unit specializing in military intelligence operations, has reportedly not been killed in a spate of Israeli attacks targeting key military figures working for, or aligned with Iran.
Esmail Qaani was believed to have been assassinated during an Israeli offensive in September which killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in Lebanon’s capital city Beirut.
Sources speaking to newspaper Middle East Eye said Qaani was alive and uninjured but being kept under guard for questioning as Iran’s government investigated serious security breaches which it said enabled Israel to target and kill senior Hezbollah figures in Lebanon.
Israel’s defense minister Yoav Gallant said Israel’s retaliation against Iran would be “lethal, precise and surprising,” following an attack last week by Iran in which more than 200 missiles struck Israel.
Tehran said the attack was in retaliation for Israel’s campaign against the Iran-backed Hezbollah militia group.
The assault forms part of a broader conflict in the Middle East between Iran, its armed proxy groups, and Israel which has seen both sides launch attacks against each other since October 2023.
And former soldier Daniel Khalife, went on trial in the UK this week after being charged with passing sensitive information on to Iran.
The court was told that the 23-year-old had secretly gathered the names of service personnel including those working for the Special Air Service (SAS) and Special Boat Service (SBS) to pass on to Iranian handlers.
Khalife, who has an Iranian mother, denied the charges, and told the court he had wanted to work for Britain’s intelligence agencies by using Iran connections he had made to his advantage.
