By Parisa Hafezi and Samia Nakhoul Aug 5 (Reuters) By Parisa Hafezi and Samia Nakhoul Aug 5 (Reuters) – Iran has warned the Persian Gulf states that any new U.S. attack on its territory would trigger retaliation against critical energy infrastructure across the region, according to five sources, as Tehran seeks to raise the cost of military action by threatening Washington’s closest regional allies. The warning was delivered through a flurry of high-level diplomatic contacts after President Donald Trump threatened on July 28 to strike Iran‘s energy network and infrastructure, the sources said. Two senior Iranian officials, two Persian Gulf sources and a senior regional diplomat with knowledge of the discussions said Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi spoke with his Saudi, Turkish and Qatari counterparts, as well as Pakistan’s army chief. All spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the matter. Araqchi urged Washington’s Persian Gulf allies to use their influence with Trump to dissuade him from launching renewed strikes, the senior diplomat said, warning that any attack on Iran would prompt retaliation against U.S. assets and energy facilities across the Persian Gulf. His message was consistent in every conversation, the diplomat said: “We’re ready to retaliate, but finding a diplomatic solution is the best way to avoid wider escalation and destruction across the region.”

Despite the apparent step towards yielding to Iranian demands, the sources pushed back against assertions by U.S. President Donald Trump that a deal reopening the strait was imminent. “The concession has already been made regarding some form of control over Hormuz,” one of the regional sources told Reuters. The other regional source said there were still details to be determined about how “control” would be defined, with Persian Gulf negotiators insisting regional countries supervise inspections of ships, and that any payment of fees be voluntary. The senior Iranian source said the text of an agreement already on the table envisioned Iran having control of ships heading into the Persian Gulf through the strait, and one of the main sticking points was what role Iran would also have over ships heading in the opposite direction. Iran‘s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei described the negotiations between Tehran and Muscat as “professional” and “moving forward”. “The two sides had reached a mutual understanding on the geographical parameters of the route under discussion,” he said.
Aug 5 (Reuters) – The U.S. Treasury said on Wednes Aug 5 (Reuters) – The U.S. Treasury said on Wednesday it had removed counter-terrorism sanctions from Iraq’s Fly Baghdad Airlines and two aircraft that were imposed in 2024 over links to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Quds Force, citing changes in the airline’s behavior. A Treasury official said that the move was not indicative of any shift in U.S. policy towards Iran‘s government, the Islamic Revolutionary Guards or any organization designated as terrorist and was unrelated to U.S. negotiations with Iran over a possible deal to end hostilities in the Persian Gulf. The removal of Fly Baghdad Airlines Co (FBA), Iraq Express and two Boeing 737 aircraft from the Treasury’s Specially Designated Nationals list was part of the Office of Foreign Assets Control’s process to reconsider sanctions after behavior changes, the official said. “FBA has demonstrated major changes to their operations such that their listing is no longer warranted,” the official said. “They have addressed sanctionable conduct.” No details were provided on the specific FBA changes that warranted the lifting of sanctions, and the official said that sanctions could be reimposed at any time. DUBAI, Aug 5 (Reuters) – The National Iranian Oil DUBAI, Aug 5 (Reuters) – The National Iranian Oil Company’s bank accounts have been frozen by a state-owned lender over mounting debt, the semi-official Fars news agency reported on Wednesday, underscoring the strain being felt by the country’s most important source of revenue. The Bank of Industry and Mine did not provide details on the amount owed or the accounts affected, according to Fars, which added that the move came despite provisions in Iran‘s budget law that deferred repayment of certain NIOC debts until the end of the Iranian calendar year in March 2027. Separately, the head of the National Development Fund (NDF said NIOC would not be able to repay the fund a nearly $17 billion debt using proceeds from the Azadegan oilfield, one of the country’s largest, as its development has been slowed by bureaucratic delays and administrative obstacles. “The repayment of NIOC’s debt via this route (Azadegan) won’t work… There was hope for payment of debts via moves such as the cession of other oilfields but there is leniency and postponing due to the current conditions,” Mehdi Ghazanfari was quoted as saying by the semi-official Borna news agency. “We hope that with the end of the war and a return to normal, this issue will be solved,” he said, referring to the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran. The NIOC public relations office did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. The developments highlight mounting financial strains on NIOC as sanctions, years of underinvestment and reliance on domestic financing have increased pressure on its balance sheet.
