Malekshahi Video Verified as Rights Group Reports IRGC Killed Three in Iran Protests

Over a dozen people have been killed in a week of unrest across Iran driven by soaring inflation, according to rights groups. Reuters confirmed the video location as Malekshahi in Iran by matching buildings, a street sign, and vegetation with satellite and file imagery, as well as other videos from the same area. Reuters could not independently verify when the footage was filmed, nor the identities of those shown or the source of the gunfire.

The Kurdistan Human Rights Network said IRGC forces killed three protesters and injured more than 30 others in Malekshahi on January 3. Deaths and arrests have been reported by both state media and rights groups, but the figures differ and Reuters has not been able to independently verify them. The protests are the biggest in three years as the Islamic Republic faces deep economic strain and mounting international pressure.
