ROME/WARSAW/BERLIN, Jan. 14 — European governments tightened their travel and security posture toward Iran on Wednesday, citing a deteriorating security environment amid intensifying nationwide unrest.

Italy’s foreign ministry strongly renewed its call for Italian citizens to leave Iran, saying around 600 Italians remain in the country, most of them in the Tehran area. Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani convened a high-level meeting with ambassadors and representatives from the defence ministry and intelligence services, and Italy reiterated its firm condemnation of violent repression of demonstrations and serious human rights violations.

Rome also flagged force-protection measures for its personnel across the wider region, noting more than 900 Italian Armed Forces members are deployed, including roughly 500 in Iraq and 400 in Kuwait, where precautionary steps are being taken to protect troops.

Poland’s foreign ministry likewise urged an immediate departure, advising Polish citizens to leave Iran immediately and recommending against all travel to the country, in an official warning issued amid the same escalating backdrop.

In parallel, German authorities issued a directive cautioning the country’s airlines against entering Iranian airspace, according to Flightradar24 as cited in reporting on Wednesday, underscoring aviation risk-management concerns as regional tensions rise.
