Sept. 4 - Six months into the war, Washington and Tehran keep the wheels of conflict spinning. As Washington’s “economic D-Day” kicked off, so did the barrage of missiles and strikes. The Islamic Republic claims to control the Strait of Hormuz, even though its foreign trade has declined and its fuel shortages have worsened. DUBAI, Sept 3 (Reuters) – A U.S. campaign to throttle Iran‘s economy by blockading its oil exports and stopping sanctions evasion is growing increasingly difficult to withstand, three senior Iranian sources said.

Washington has in recent weeks sought to ratchet up the economic pressure on Tehran, in an effort to extract concessions in any future negotiation that six months of conflict have so far failed to secure.

Although Iran‘s clerical rulers managed to bypass sanctions for decades, the latest U.S. moves have left them in a far more sensitive position, with few remaining channels to secure foreign currency or buy goods, the sources said.

JERUSALEM, Sept 3 (Reuters) – Defense Minister Israel Katz said on Thursday that Israel would strike Iran‘s energy and civilian infrastructure if Iran were to attack Israel, the country’s latest threat to Tehran amid a sudden recent escalation of U.S.-Iran fighting.

Fears of renewed escalation gripped the Middle East this week after the U.S. and Iran exchanged their biggest barrage since July, with Washington striking Iran‘s southern coast and Tehran firing at U.S. bases across the region.

Israel, which with the U.S. launched a joint air war against Iran in February, has not been involved in the latest rounds of fighting. Speaking to defence ministry employees on Thursday, Katz said that an “Iranian attack on Israel would free Israel from any existing limitations on attacking Iran.”

Katz added: “We will cripple all of Iran‘s national military and civilian infrastructure – including energy infrastructure – and return Iran deep into the Stone Age and darkness.”

Sept. 2 - An Islamic Republic parliamentary committee is investigating the Ministry of Agriculture Jihad to determine whether economic corruption linked to the import of livestock feed and other agricultural inputs has cost the public purse as much as 2 quadrillion rials ($1 billion).

The Ministry of Agriculture Jihad allowed preferential government foreign exchange rates to be applied to the import of livestock feed and other agricultural goods. However, after the products entered the country, they were reportedly sold on the free market at prices up to four times higher than their original cost.

The ministry is now resisting a request from the committee in charge of investigating and inspecting the Ministry of Agriculture to provide a list of companies that imported these goods. The refusal has raised concerns about the possible existence of a corruption and rent-seeking network — referring to profits or benefits obtained above normal market value — within the ministry’s upper levels.

The Tehran-based Tabnak news website reported on Aug. 31 on the alleged $1 billion corruption scandal. It said the Ministry of Agriculture Jihad’s response to a request from Iran’s General Inspection Organization (GIO, affiliated with the Judiciary) for a list of importers had exposed what it termed a massive foreign-exchange rent-seeking scheme involving livestock feed and other agricultural inputs.
