RIO DE JANEIRO, July 6 – Leaders of the growing BRICS group of developing nations were set to gather in Rio de Janeiro on Sunday, calling for reform of traditional Western institutions while presenting the bloc as a defender of multilateralism in an increasingly fractured world.

However, there are questions about the shared goals of an increasingly heterogenous BRICS group, which has grown to include regional rivals along with major emerging economies.

Stealing some thunder from this year’s summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping chose to send his prime minister in his place. Russian President Vladimir Putin is attending online due to an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court.
DUBAI, July 5 (Reuters) – Iran’s Supreme Leade DUBAI, July 5 (Reuters) – Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei attended a religious event on Saturday, according to a video carried by state television, after reports that he was in a “secure location” since the start of a 12-day air war with Israel in which top Iranian commanders and nuclear scientists were killed.

The video carried by state media showed dozens attending a ceremony to mark Ashura, the holiest day of the Shi’ite Muslim calendar, standing chanting as Khamenei entered a hall where many government functions are held.

For apparent security reasons, Khamenei had issued pre-taped messages during the war which started on June 13, and avoided public appearances.

On June 26, in pre-recorded remarks aired on state television, Khamenei promised that Iran would not surrender despite U.S. President Donald Trump’s calls.

July 5 - Iran’s highest-ranking religious author July 5 - Iran’s highest-ranking religious authority, Ali Khamenei appeared in public on Saturday for the first time in 22 days, attending a private Muharram mourning ceremony at his compound in Tehran.

Photos and footage released by his office showed Khamenei addressing a carefully selected audience in what marked his first appearance since Israeli airstrikes began on June 13.

According to regional analysts and intelligence sources, the 85-year-old leader is believed to have spent part of the past three weeks in a secure bunker amid concerns over a potential targeted assassination by Israel.

Khamenei’s extended absence had fueled speculation about his health and safety, but Saturday’s appearance seemed calculated to dispel doubts about both — even as tensions across the region remain high.
