The work has repeatedly brought her into conflict with the authorities, and on Iran‘s National Journalist Day on Saturday she learned she had been sentenced to 15 years in prison. The sentence was handed down under a law enacted after a 12-day war between Israel and Iran in 2025, legislation that Iranian authorities say is intended to combat espionage and cooperation with hostile states. When Moaiery arrived at Tehran’s Revolutionary Court, she was not given formal case documents, she said. Instead, a friend accompanying her copied details from a charge sheet by hand. Rights groups say such procedures reflect a lack of transparency in Iran‘s judicial system. According to the handwritten notes reviewed by Reuters, the accusations against her include giving interviews to media outlets deemed hostile by the authorities and providing photographs to organisations linked to the U.S. and Israel. Reuters could not independently verify the contents of the charge sheet. In a statement provided to Reuters, Moaiery said the intelligence wing of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps raided her home during anti-government protests in January and confiscated her phone, laptop and other electronic equipment. By Nazanine Nouri Aug. 11 - The Belgian-Iranian so By Nazanine Nouri Aug. 11 - The Belgian-Iranian sociologist Firouzeh Nahavandi, Professor Emerita of Sociology at Belgium’s ULB University (Université Libre de Bruxelles), has been granted the title of Baroness by King Philippe of Belgium. The title was conferred on the occasion of the Belgian National Day honors on July 21st in recognition of her distinguished academic career and her contributions to the study of the Muslim world, international development, and the status of women. It was a surprise announcement which the Royal Palace made over the telephone a few days earlier, Nahavandi explained. In a July 21 interview with the Belgian channel RTBF, Nahavandi said she viewed this honor as recognizing a lifetime of academic work. “I have conducted research, taught and written extensively, and I continue to do so,” she said. “This is recognition of the transmission of knowledge. For me, that is the most important aspect of everything I’ve done.” Nahavandi is the author of several books on the Iranian Revolution and on the women of Iran (published in French). She is also a frequent commentator in the French-speaking media on Iranian politics, the Middle East, Islam, women’s rights and international development. In a June interview with the Qualita news outlet, she offered insights into what the war with the U.S. and Israel represented for the Islamic Republic. “This war is also a question of survival for the regime, especially because domestically, the regime has not managed to control the population — despite the fact that the repression is very severe, that people are hanged every day, that arrests are continuing, and that a student rebellion is beginning to take shape,” she said. “The regime is unable to control the situation domestically. WASHINGTON, Aug 11 (Reuters) – The U.S. military o WASHINGTON, Aug 11 (Reuters) – The U.S. military on Tuesday said it had used missiles to disable the steering gear of a Panama-flagged cargo ship which ignored repeated warnings to stop violating a naval blockade on Iranian ports. A U.S. Navy MH-60 helicopter fired two Hellfire missiles into the Vela Nova’s engine room, the Central Command added. “As of Aug. 11, CENTCOM has redirected 55 commercial vessels attempting to run the blockade, disabled 3 non-compliant vessels, and boarded 2,” it said in a statement.
