In Memoriam

It is with great sorrow that the board of directors of the Foundation for Iranian Studies announces the passing of Dr. Hormoz Hekmat on the first day of July of 2020.

Hormoz was a scholar, writer, and an intellectual bridge connecting the East and the West. He joined the Foundation in 1990 bringing with him his exceptional skills as writer, editor, and scholar, but above all his kindness, generosity of spirit, and unusual talent in working across differences of belief and opinion. As managing editor during Shahrokh Meskoob’s editorship and for fifteen years as editor in chief of the Foundation for Iranian Studies’ journal Iran Nameh he developed ties of camaraderie and mutual respect with some of the most renowned writers and scholars of Iranian studies that made the journal one of the most admired in the field. He was a unique personality, a pleasure to work with and an honor to call our colleague. We will miss him.

We mourn Hormoz Hekmat’s passing and offer our condolences to his family, friends, and all who have known and benefited from his erudition, and his dedication to promoting knowledge of Iran’s past and present.
