This war is illegal and it must end,” Sybiha wrote on X of his conversation with Araqchi. Iran confirmed the conversation had taken place. Araqchi said on Sunday that the Ukrainian attack on an Iranian commercial vessel in the Caspian Sea, which killed one sailor and injured another, “cannot go unanswered”. In his comments, Sybiha said Ukraine’s actions were “aimed solely at defending our country from Russian aggression and never intended to target civilian vessels or people”. In more than four years of conflict with Russia, Ukraine has faced barrages of Iranian-designed drones. Kyiv has, over that time, developed technology to counter drone threats and has offered its assistance to Middle Eastern countries facing strikes launched this year by Tehran. Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, meanwhile, wrote on X that he had spoken to Sybiha and “discussed the challenges facing our nations, including the threat posed by Iran.” He said he looked forward to deepening cooperation with Ukraine. Abolfazl Sepahi-Badjani and Amirhossein Safari-Hosseinabadi were accused of taking part in the killing of four security force members in Alikhani Square in Isfahan on January 8, the judiciary’s news outlet Mizan said. The nationwide anti-government protests were repressed in the biggest crackdown in the history of the Islamic Republic, during which security forces killed thousands of protesters. Since then, more pressure has piled onto Iran over five months of war that the authorities in Tehran view as existential. A panel of United Nations experts said in a press release on Monday, before Sepahi-Badjani and Safari-Hosseinabadi’s executionswere announced, that at least 24 people had been executed for offences tied to the January protests. At least 12 of those convicted of involvement in the Alikhani Square case have been sentenced to death, the U.N. experts said. Two of them, Erfan Esfandiari and Gol Mohammad Mohammadi, were executed on July 19, Mizan said. The U.N. experts said the 12 had been sentenced to death in a single hearing, in a closed courtroom and without clarity as to each defendant’s individual responsibility, which the experts said violated standards for fair trials. Human Rights Watch said this week that at least 50 people had been executed on what it called vague national security charges over the past four months.

Asked about reports that Netanyahu wanted to talk to him about Pickaxe Mountain, a fortified facility buried deep underground near one of Iran‘s main nuclear sites, Trump said, using Netanyahu’s nickname. “I don’t need Bibi to tell me that. Bibi’s telling me that because he wants me to stay involved.” “Why don’t you just tell it to me? Why do you have to announce it to the world?” Trump said in an interview with “Fox & Friends.” The New York Post reported on Monday that Netanyahu was expected to provide intelligence to Trump that Iran is building up its nuclear facilities at Pickaxe Mountain and is lying about wanting a peace deal, citing a source in Jerusalem. Netanyahu’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Trump’s remarks. The U.S. president was meeting Netanyahu after first having brief closed-door talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

Relations with Zelenskiy have warmed as Ukraine has blunted Russian advances, while Netanyahu arrives amid growing White House frustration over the lack of progress toward a broader settlement in the Iran conflict and criticism from some of Trump’s supporters who oppose deeper U.S. involvement in the Middle East. The two men are in Washington to attend a memorial service for Senator Lindsey Graham, a hawkish Republican who was one of Trump’s closest allies and who frequently tried to coax Trump into providing more support for Ukraine’s war. Zelenskiy said that anti-ballistic defense and strategic cooperation with the U.S. were the “number-one priority” for meetings with Trump and his team, as he arrived in Washington. “Peace needs to be brought closer,” he said in a post on X. Both the Ukraine war and widening Middle East conflict are at critical junctures. After the collapse of a ceasefire in the Iran war, Trump says he has paused U.S. airstrikes to give diplomacy another chance. Zelenskiy, meanwhile, has been buoyed by Ukraine’s recent successes. Still, there is no end in sight for either conflict. Netanyahu has run hot and cold with Trump, who at times has had to rein in the Israeli leader from attacking targets in Lebanon to try to weaken Iran-backed Hezbollah militants. An acrimonious phone call in June in which the president called the prime minister “fucking crazy”, first leaked to the media and later publicly confirmed by Trump himself, laid bare the strains between the ⁠two leaders. Sources familiar with the matter said Netanyahu aims to get Trump’s support for his re-election campaign ahead of an October 27 vote.
