The Islamic Republic has accused Israel of trying to provoke an all-out war in the Middle East and has launched high-speed missile barrages at Israel. Its proxies, Hezbollah and Hamas, continue to strike Israel daily.
The current war in the region began after an attack by Hamas terrorists on Oct. 7 against Israel, resulting in more than 1,200 fatalities from 30 countries and the taking of 251 hostages, including Israelis and other nationals. The United Nations Human Rights Council described the attack as both a “crime against humanity” and a “war crime.”
Following the Oct. 7 attack, Israel committed to eliminating Hamas leaders and leaders of other militia groups in the Middle East supported by the Iranian regime. A wide range of automatic firearms, rocket launchers, mortar launchers, and rockets seized in Gaza and Lebanon were found to be manufactured in Iran. Some of the weapons originated in Russia and other nations but were supplied to Gaza by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) for use against Israel.
More than 42,000 people have died in Gaza since the fighting began, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, and a further 2,500 in Lebanon, according to the Lebanese Health Ministry.
The conflict led World Bank President Ajay Banga to say that a widening of the war could significantly impact the global economy and called the growing loss of civilian lives in the region “unconscionable.”
