The two-week ceasefire between the United States and the Islamic Republic quickly ran into a stumbling block over Lebanon, after Israel launched some of its heaviest strikes yet there. Tehran said the attacks violated the spirit of the ceasefire and made it problematic to continue talks with Washington. But both the United States and Israel said the ceasefire was limited to U.S.-Iran tensions and did not extend to Lebanon.
Still, the dispute exposed the contradiction in Tehran’s position. On the one hand, it insists that Hezbollah does not act on the Islamic Republic’s behalf; yet its officials emphasized that the Israeli attack was a “grave violation” of the US-Iran ceasefire, insisting the US must choose war or peace.
