Nurses in Iran have been holding nationwide protests for the third week, with demonstrations reaching the capital, Tehran. This marks the first time in Iran’s history that nurses from government hospitals have gone on strike.
The basic salary for nurses in Iran is much lower than the country’s poverty line. According to Mohammad Sharifi Moghadam, Secretary General of the Iranian Nursing Guild, the monthly salary of an Iranian nurse is currently equivalent to about $200. In European countries, a new nurse can earn between $2,000 and $4,000 per month; in the United States and Canada, it can be as high as $5,000 per month.
Iran faces a healthcare crisis due to a critically low number of nursing staff. Government figures suggest that there are currently only 215,000 nurses for a population numbering close to 88 million.
In a show of support, other workforces such as the Union of Truck Owners and Drivers, have backed the medical staff.
