June 20 - A high-profile Iranian military and political figure declared dead by Israel last week has proclaimed himself alive in a message published by Iranian state media on Friday.

“I am alive and ready to sacrifice myself,” Ali Shamkhani reportedly said in a message addressed to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. “The victory is near. The name of Iran will shine in the heights of history as always,” said his message, published by a large number of Iranian state-affiliated media outlets.

Shamkhani, a top aide to Khamenei, was reported dead by Israel and Iranian media following Israel’s June 13 strikes on Iran.

On Friday multiple Iranian outlets, including IRNA, Tasnim and Fars, said Shamkhani was not dead, instead reporting that he had been “severely injured and hospitalized” and was now “in stable condition.” No new pictures of Shamkhani were published alongside his reported message.

Shamkhani previously served as Iran’s top national security official and held senior roles in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the ministry of defense.

Well known in foreign-policy circles in Washington and Europe, he had recently been acting as a key adviser for Iran in the recent nuclear talks with the US – which came to a standstill in the wake of Israel’s strikes.

The tremors struck at shallow depths of around 10 kilometers, prompting residents across Semnan and surrounding provinces to evacuate buildings as a precaution. The tremors were felt in several major cities including Qom, Tehran, Karaj, and Damavand.
While no major damage or casualties have been reported so far, the quakes come amid heightened regional tensions and ongoing seismic activity across the country.

DUBAI/JERUSALEM, June 20 (Reuters) – Iran said on Friday it would not discuss the future of its nuclear program while under attack by Israel, as Europe tried to coax Tehran back into negotiations and the United States considers whether to get involved in the conflict.

A week into its campaign, Israel said it had struck dozens of military targets, including missile production sites, a research body it said was involved in nuclear weapons development in Tehran and military facilities in western and central Iran.

The Israeli military later said they had struck surface-to-air missile batteries in southwestern Iran as part of efforts to achieve air superiority over the country. Explosions were heard in Iran‘s southwestern Khuzestan province and at least four people there were killed, IRNA news agency reported.

At least five people were injured when Israel hit a five-storey building in Tehran housing a bakery and a hairdresser’s, Fars news agency reported. Iranian air defences were activated on Friday evening, Fars news agency reported.

Iran fired missiles at Beersheba in southern Israel and Haifa in the north, causing damage to an Ottoman-era mosque, according to Foreign Minister Gideon Saar. A foreign ministry video also showed extensive damage to a nearby high-rise building that houses a branch of Israel’s Interior Ministry.

Haifa is home to Israel’s busiest seaport and a naval base.

Fars news agency quoted an Iranian military spokesman as saying Tehran’s missile and drone attacks on Friday had used long-range and ultra-heavy missiles against military sites, defence industries and command and control centers.

About 20 missiles were fired in those latest Iranian strikes, an Israeli military official said, and at least two people were hurt, according to the Israeli ambulance service.

Israel’s envoy to the United Nations, Danny Danon, told the U.N. Security Council his country would not stop its attacks “until Iran‘s nuclear threat is dismantled”. Iran‘s U.N. envoy Amir Saeid Iravani called for Security Council action and said Tehran was alarmed by reports that the U.S. may join the war.

June 20 - Detectives have launched an urgent probe after the two men were set upon outside the embassy, which is opposite Hyde Park in west London, just before 10am.

Officers and paramedics swooped on Princes Gate, Knightsbridge, scrambling to detain suspects and treat the injured activists.

Witnesses told MailOnline how pro-Israeli protesters were chanting support for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and calling for the Iranian regime to be toppled before violence erupted and two of the activists were attacked.

It comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East, with Iran and Israel locked in a brutal conflict that has escalated over the last week.

The two victims were treated for injuries at the scene and have been taken to hospital.

Dramatic pictures from the scene show the protesters being treated by paramedics on stretchers and receiving oxygen, while the alleged attackers were seen being hauled away in handcuffs.
