July 15 (Reuters) – The Islamic Republic said it July 15 (Reuters) – The Islamic Republic said it will hold talks with its main Asian partners, Russia and China, on the sidelines of a Shanghai Cooperation Organization summit on Tuesday, as Tehran looks for support following a 12-day air war with Israel last month.

“We will have bilateral meetings with the Chinese foreign minister, which naturally has its own importance in the current situation, as well as with the Russian foreign minister,” Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said on Telegram.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization is a 10-nation Eurasian security and political grouping whose members include China, Russia, India, Pakistan and the Islamic Republic. Tianjin in northern China is hosting the 25th SCO Foreign Ministers meeting.

In June, Israel and the United States launched strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities which they said were part of a nuclear program geared toward weaponization. Tehran denies having any such plans.

Since the re-imposition of American sanctions on the Islamic Republic during U.S. President Donald Trump’s first term, Tehran has deepened ties with both Moscow through a 20-year strategic pact and Beijing, which buys as much as 90% of Iranian oil exports.

“The SCO is gradually opening up its place in the global arena, meaning it is gradually going beyond the regional arena, and it has many different issues on its agenda, including in the economic, political and security fields,” Araqchi wrote.
July 15 - (Reuters) – Hardline Iranian lawmaker July 15 - (Reuters) – Hardline Iranian lawmaker Esmail Kosari said any closure of the Strait of Hormuz was still under review but no decision has yet been made, in comments carried by the Islamic Republic’s state media on Monday.

“Military measures concerning the Strait of Hormuz have been completed, but no decision has yet been made regarding its (closure) and the matter is still under review,” Kosari, a member of the national security committee in the Islamic Republic’s parliament, was quoted as saying.

It was not immediately clear what military measures he may be referring to.

The possibility of the Islamic Republic closing the waterway, through which about a fifth of global oil and gas shipments pass, was speculated upon during the 12-day air war between Israel and the Islamic Republic last month.

The strait lies between Oman and Iran and links the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman to the south and the Arabian Sea beyond.

The Islamic Republic has over the years threatened to close it but has never followed through on that threat.

“It’s us who decide what time it is open and what time it would be closed; currently we are reviewing and we can execute whenever it’s necessary,” Kosari added.

DUBAI, July 14 (Reuters) – Iran will react to an DUBAI, July 14 (Reuters) – Iran will react to any reimposition of United Nations sanctions over its nuclear program, the country’s foreign ministry spokesperson said on Monday, without elaborating on what actions Tehran might take.

A French diplomatic source told Reuters last week that European powers would have to restore U.N. sanctions on Iran under the so-called “snapback mechanism” if there were no nuclear deal that guaranteed European security interests.

The “snapback mechanism” is a process that would reimpose U.N. sanctions on Tehran under a 2015 nuclear deal that lifted the measures in return for restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program.

“The threat to use the snapback mechanism lacks legal and political basis and will be met with an appropriate and proportionate response from the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei told a press conference, without giving further details.

DUBAI, July 14 (Reuters) – An explosion at a res DUBAI, July 14 (Reuters) – An explosion at a residential building injured seven people in the Iranian city of Qom, Iranian state media reported on Monday, with the fire department blaming a gas leak and Qom’s governor ruling out any “terrorist” action.

Since the end of a 12-day air war last month between Iran and Israel, in which Israel and the United States attacked Iran’s nuclear facilities, several gas explosions have occurred in Iran, and the authorities have not blamed Israel.

Qom Governor Akbar Behnamjoo was quoted by state media as saying: “The cause of the explosion in a residential building of Pardisan was not terrorism.”

The director of Qom’s fire department told the semi-official Fars news agency four residential units were damaged in the blast in the Pardisan neighbourhood.

“Initial assessments show that the cause of the incident was a gas leak, and follow-ups are continuing in this regard,” the director said.
