Nov. 14 – The U.S.’s Special Envoy to Syria said Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa would actively assist the U.S. in dismantling Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, and several of the Islamic Republic’s proxy groups in the Middle East, during a visit to the White House.
Ambassador Thomas Barrack made the comment in a post on his X account, in which he added that the president would also help to disassemble Iran-aligned groups including Hamas and Hezbollah in the region.
The historic visit marked the first time that a Syrian Head of State has visited the White House since Syria gained its independence in 1946.
More than 20 international Olympic medallists, athletes and coaches have signed a letter addressed to the United Nations, calling for a halt to the execution of Iranian boxing champion Vafaei Sani.
Sani was arrested for taking part in the nationwide anti-government protests in 2019 and has been accused of supporting an opposition group.
Signatories include the former world number 1 in women’s singles tennis Martina Navratilova, Silver medallist and swimmer Sharron Davies, and Bahram Mavaddat, a footballer who played for Iran during the 1978 World Cup.
And a British couple detained in Iran on espionage charges have gone on hunger strike in prison, according to their son.
Craig and Lindsay Foreman have been summoned to court on several occasions but no judgment has yet been handed down.
Ms. Foreman told her son Joe Bennet that she felt let down by the British government, and authorities in Iran. The UK’s Foreign Office said it was continuing to raise the case with Iranian officials and providing the couple with consular assistance. The Foremans have denied all charges against them.
