Dec. 7 – Iranian Nobel peace prize winner Narges Mohammadi was released from Evin prison this week to undergo medical treatment, following mounting concerns about her health.
The human rights campaigner had previously undergone surgery to remove a benign tumor and a bone grafting operation.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee said it was “deeply worried about her enduring illness and pain” and called on Iranian authorities to overturn her prison sentence.
Prominent Iranian rapper Toomaj Salehi was released from prison after serving a one-year sentence for speaking out against the Iranian regime.
Salehi had been sentenced to death in April for his support of the country’s nationwide anti-government protests.
Iran has been strongly condemned by states and human rights watchdogs for its increasing use of jail terms and the death penalty against human rights campaigners and Iranians who criticize the regime.
And Iran’s government ramped up its already draconian ‘chastity laws’ with the passing of new legislation which will significantly tighten current dress restrictions.
The law allows for even harsher punishments for men and women who violate the dress code, which have historically been disproportionately enforced against women.
Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian expressed his disapproval of the new law, which he called “vague” in a post on social media platform X, and called for discussion and interaction on the issue.
